Well, if you take care of the car, darn near anything will be reliable. If you just want to put in the regular maintenance, Hondas and Toyotas seem to be the most reliable. Your best bet is to check out Edmunds. They have anything you could want to know about cars, new and used. My last 3 have all been Mopars, not a problem with any of them, but then again my turnaround on cars is 3 years, so I get rid of them before they have a chance to become unreliable.

I'm gonna have to agree with urbantechie, The Mclaren is a very reliable car, if just slightly out of your price range, not to mention discontinued i believe Check it out here.

<< I heard that either toyota/honda's have issues with the timing chains
in the engines...

How common a problem is this? Was this a particular problem with a certain
car or engine?
>>

I'm not sure if all of this is exactly correct, but:
AFAIK, most newer cars use timing belts instead of chains. The problem with the chains was that when they snapped, they'd damage the teeth of the cog they were on. Timing belts help since you don't have to replace both the chain and cog, just a belt. However, most timing belts are serpentine, so the engine might have to be pulled to replace them. The repair costs still should be cheaper than a car with a chain, though. Another thing my friend who is a tow truck driver told me is that no matter what car you drive, if it's a daily driver, your timing belt is probably gonna go after 70-80,000 miles. Its a fact of life.

Toyota Corolla...there's a reason its been the most sold car in the world. Go look it up in Guiness Book of World Records.

I have a '91 Corolla that has 130K kms..it's never given a single problem..its been thru two major accidents (one collision with the front, the other with the back)...and it still runs strong. Not only is it reliable, its safe too. No one got injured during the accidents. Plus that car can go over anything..I love going over big snow piles left by the plow on the side of the road.

And the paint...oh my...its the best paint ever! It always looks waxed and it only has a few scratches. My '99 Maxima has more scratches than my Corolla! Of course we paid extra for the special paint option from the Toyota Dealer.

Mister T: Nissan makes the best V6 (VQ30DE - its in the Maxima). Its been in the Wards Top Ten Engines list for 5 years straight. Toyota's V6 is real smooth too, but not as torquey (so I've heard, dont have firsthand experience with it).

I think most any import will outlast anything domestic....

I totally agree with you. Here's the funny thing, most Honda Accord's are built in Marysville, Ohio and most Toyota Camry's are built in Georgetown, Kentucky. Last time I checked those were both domestic cities contributing to the United States economy, even though the parent corporations headquarters are outside of the USA in Japan. It always puzzles me whenever a redneck patriotic American (using the term loosely) says "buy American". Well aren't most Fords, GM's, Dodge's made in Canada, Mexico or other places? I once read an article that the average Accord or Camry has more "Made in the USA" parts than the average Ford, GM, Dodge car.

I would personally LOVE to support an all American company. But I'm a consumer who wants the most quality bang for my buck. It just so happens that the Japanese and Germans make a better quality car than the American corporations do. Funny thing is if I were to buy a regular sized SUV I'd buy a Ford Explorer in a heart beat, go figure.

Anyone agree or disagree?

The Toyota Camry is in need of a major model update. I like the styling and VTEC V6 of the Accord, slap that into the Camry and you have a winner!

Nissan Sentras are also extremely reliable cars. Probably a little too cheap for you, though...

You have anything to back that up, or are you just making dangerous generalizations? Oh I love the crack on rednecks. I guess you don't have any poor ignorant people where you live.

Anything to back up the quality/reliability. BTW, I never hear anyone around here say that they buy something just because it is domestic. People around here buy whatever is cheap. Lots of Kias and Hyundais now.

Hmmm...according to JD Power and Associates' dependability study, Lincoln, Buick, and Cadillac has lesser problems than BMW,Subaru, Audi, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia, Isuzu, Land Rover, Saab, Suzuki, Volvo, and Volkswagen.

Although the domestics still trail in reliability, they definitely have made lots of progress over the years.

Between Accord and the Camry, the Maxima has the best V6.

Just kidding

My opinion is that the Accord doesn't need a V6, the Camry does, and the Maxima never had a 4. I've never driven an Accord V6, but I found the 4 pretty good with a stick or auto. I test drove two different '98s and liked the stick better, but you want an automatic. I've driven a Lexus ES300, essentially a V6 Camry, and it was OK, but I'd already been spoiled by the Maxima. The only other newer Camry I've driven was a '93 auto 4 cylinder, and it seemed to be running very well but it was pretty weak overall.

As for belts vs. chains, I guess each manufacturer has its reasons. Honda and Toyota seem to like belts and Nissan seems to like chains. Belts need to be replaced every 60,000-90,000 miles, but they probably have other advantages I'm not thinking of.
