I went through 2 and a half hours of that movie the other day and still don't know what it is about?

Can someone tell me? I am very confused...

Why did betty turn into diane?
And what the heck is the ending about?

everything after the blue box is opened is what really happened. everything before then is diane's dream, where she sees herself as betty. the dream is how she would have liked her life to go.
