I definitely ain't a goulash expert, but according to the write-up in the article: "There are many variations on how the hearty dish is cooked, but the traditional recipe includes beef, onions, paprika, tomatoes, green pepper, potatoes, and sometimes noodles." I assume, like most dishes, there's a million ways people make it.

Been eating it all my life and it's a go to dish for me at any restaurant, first time i saw noodle, looks good though

Bought a gyro. Good thing there's a place down the street that makes 'em. There is another place about 6 miles down the road called Cafe Athens, but I have yet to try them.

THE WORST FOOD EVER - SURSTRÖMMING
A couple of Finlanders trying Swedish cuisine...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmu7bHj81WI

https://youtu.be/wmu7bHj81WI

My dad told me about something he read about:
Hákarl

Fermented shark is chosen instead of fresh shark meat because the meat of the Greenland shark is poisonous when fresh, due to a high content of urea and trimethylamine oxide, but may be consumed after being processed. Allowing the shark to fully decay and cure removes the toxins from the flesh, making it edible.
Then it's hung out to dry for a few months.

"Oh man, Hinrik died after eating that shark meat! I know, let's let it sit out for a month or two. Maybe the evil in it will be gone by then."

"OooooWEE! That's rank. Valdis, try a bite and see if it's not evil anymore."

"Good, Valdis didn't die. Dry the rest out so it stops rotting, then we'll be able to eat it over the long winter."

Both are just entries in the long list of foods that exist exclusively because refrigeration wasn't available for such a long time.

Christ, and imagine working in a factory where this stuff is made.
And what's quality control like? How do you know when it's really gone bad?

For Denmark I would say "Smørrebrød"(buttered bread), open sandwiches on rye bread with different toppings. There's some specific toppings that are matched to create the "correct" smørrebrød.

I've only been to South Africa 4 times, but I would agree with you that biltong and braai (and pap) are the stereotypical foods. It is hard to really give South Africa any particular dish since it is more a blend of cultures than even American food is. It is like you took the best of everything (meats, wine, Asian spices) and blended them together into quite tasty foods (with the exception of pap which is never good). The restaurants in Cape Town are especially good.

I think there is a lot more variation in American food because it is so much larger, but yes, South Africa formed as a melting pot as a lot of different cultures.

Pap (for other readers, pap is porridge made from corn meal/flour, often made very dry) is somewhat of an acquired taste. I don't love it either to be honest. But if I do have it, I never have it with that tomato and onion sauce they often pair with it - chakalaka I think its called. I don't like that at all.

Garlic bread and potato salad are really common braai accompaniments (braai = barbecue for other readers). I much prefer garlic bread to pap actually. Also corn on the cob, pretty much exactly the same as Americans would have it.

Oh another common South African dish is the bunny chow (no bunnies are harmed in the making of this dish!). I don't know why it is called a bunny chow, it was invented by South African Indians. They hollow out a quarter of a loaf of bred and replace it with curry. Its amazing. Some modern curry restaurants also add cheese and fries I believe. Its considered fast food.

Ugh, that list is so bad on some of the items. Australia floating pie as the signature dish there? No way. It would either be grilled Witchetty or Vegemite. You aren't really going to find those anywhere else for a reason.

Wiener schnitzel for Austria? That list should have meant Germany has schnitzel as the main dish for the country. Germany has many more schnitzel variety as it is a German invented dish. Such as Jager schnitzel or Ram schnitzel. The fact that Austria stole it as their "national" dish is insulting.

Then Tamales for Costa Rica? Ugh. Wrong place again.

That is not the official "national dish" of norway.

Mutton with Cabbage Stew is. My grandma has made it before. It is awesome. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fårikål

Also my grandma makes awesome Kjøttboller, similar to swedish meatballs but more flavor. Super awesome mega delicious.

Also, Smoked Salmon is awesome, and originated in Norway.

And, another Norway's got some really awesome and interesting cheese, my favorite of which is Gjetost which my grandma introduced me to a number of years ago, its cheese, but it tastes like caramel!

EDIT.. ohh yea, another of my favorite cheeses, Jarlsberg, comes from norway. Its very similar to swiss cheese, but I think its a bit more nuttier. Its not quite as good as a Gruyere though IMO

For Spain I would have thought they'd pick Paella, but instead they picked Jamon Iberico, which is a lot like Italian prosciutto.

I wouldn't say burger as the unique american food. You can get a damn good burger pretty much anywhere. Now BBQ, not just the grilled/smoked meats but the sauce & cooking method. No where else can you get that.

How is it the wrong place? Tamales are wide spread throughout the region.

Exactly. If it is a widespread dish then the nationality of the dish should be associated with the origin country, unless the origin country doesn't do that dish anymore. Costa Rica has several other dish I would label as a "national" dish over tamales. It is also telling that Costa Rica lists their national dish as the Spotted Chicken dish and not tamales.

just found out that gyro is pronounced gheero.

There is a very young waitress who works at a local restaurant who gets really mad whenever I call it something else. First time I got one I was like I'll have a hero please. She flipped out  Since then, I alternate saying it by all of the different pronunciations and she always says no it's GY-ROW! (like gyro-copter) I don't go in often enough for her to remember me but it's pretty funny when I do, especially when I bring my buddy who is actually from Greece :awe:

Ask her for a doner kebab next time. When she says that it's a gyro just say "meh, same thing". :sneaky:

A good mole sauce can make or break a restaurant. And a great mole sauce can make one famous

The Red Iguana in SLC has the best goddamned mole sauce in the universe. I think it's a 36 hour cook.
