Hmm I have a JVC SVHS as well and purchased it about the same time and under the same circumstances, I was poor. But it had editing capability, forgot what its was called, you could stop and start recording without the wavy lines. Same thing that real editing video recorders had. Mine still works. Does it look like this?

No, mine was the very first commercially available SVHS machine (the JVC HR-S7000U). SVHS, AKA Super VHS, is a technology that was developed by JVC (and was very soon licensed by other manufacturers). It allowed very noticeably superior recording of live TV. I couldn't stand VHS recordings . The JVC HR-S7000U looks like this (Click to enlarge...the bottom right side here is up, but it drops down like your left bottom side to reveal many controls):

I didn't have the SVHS, but had a very similar JVC VHS that my dad stole from me when I moved. They made the best equipment in the 90s.

Are they as dangerously pretty together as I'm imagining?
It's pretty nice, pc games look great. Blacks are just phenomenal even coming from a plasma, and haven't noticed a hint of IR even using it on the desktop.

Haven't really been impressed with any 4k video though, especially the limited selection.

Do you find yourself having to pour water into it, or does it make ice out of condensate?

Yes, I refill it probably once a day. I wish there was a water-line option, but this is a stand-alone unit that you just plug into the wall for power & has a manually-filled reservoir. The benefit is that you can stick it anywhere, but that comes at the cost of the convenience of having it auto-refill like a fridge icemaker. I have it next to my kitchen sink right now, which has a pull-out faucet head, so I can quickly refill it without need to use a pitcher. I have mine running 24/7 so that it's always stocked with ice, so I just refill it as needed before I go to bed. I have a couple double vacuum-insulated cups that keep the ice cool all day, plus The Jug from Isolator Fitness to carry around a gallon of water with me, so it works out really well if you like nugget ice.

Sonic does sell their ice by the bag for pretty cheap, but they're like an hour round trip from me with traffic, so meh. It's nice having it at home. The machine was stupid expensive ($500), although I got it on sale on their Indigogo campaign, so it wasn't quite that bad, but still...

The ice maker is tempting but we have a very small kitchen.

It's awesome, but it is HUGE. Barely fits under my wall cabinets. You have to really like nugget ice to (1) invest in one, and (2) set aside the counterspace for it. And remember to fill it up when it gets low (which for us is pretty much daily). And run a bleach cleaning cycle once a month or so.

Real question, why is this preferred over refrigerator ice? Besides portability, and speed (?) ?

It's nugget ice (different from cubed ice), have you had it? I think it's one of those things you really like or else you absolutely don't care about at all. I am thrilled to have a machine that can make nugget ice in my home, despite having taken college classes that were cheaper than the machine was.

I bought a selection of 10 vintages of Screaming Eagle, 2003-2012, from Costco of all places. Had to kick off the cellar with a bang.

Who knows, Screaming Eagle is known to appreciate -- so this may end up being an investment.

Back in Feb. I got a 55" LG OLED from last year since it had a better sound system built-in and was discounted. And yeah, the blacks and grays are amazing. I used to squint during dark scenes trying to make out what was going on. Now even black on black comes out clear as day. I remember there was one scene in The Expanse that showed a cloaked ship against a black star scape, basically black on black, and you could still pick out the ship. I was amazed. And the dynamic range is also pretty amazing.

Meh, computer gear, or the specialized hardrock 29er

Started learning guitar this year, so I'm sure that will be my new obsession.

Soon after buying the JVC SVHS machine for $1000 I bought an RCA VRF695 S-VHS VCR for ~$700. It was relatively feature rich including PIP. Both machines eventually crapped out on me. I have a couple of other SVHS VCRs now, at least one of them works. The other I found on the curb and haven't tested! I have practically no use for VCRs now, but I do have a tape I want to digitize... one day.

I do prefer it over regular ice cubes, but it's also exceedingly rare for me to use ice in anything when I'm at home.

For me it's usually in real hot weather, uncommon here. But by the time I reach for my freezer's ice it often as a very off taste. I suppose a dedicated machine doesn't have that foul smell/taste. I like the plug aspect. The cubes are just too big.

It makes me drink more water tbh. I like pellet-sized nugget ice, and although I hate the food at Sonic's, I'd always stop by for a cold soda. Blue ocean water om nom nom.

Sounds like you might need a new water filter for your icemaker.

The Opal ice maker does have an optional filter, and even though my tap water is mediocre, I haven't found it to negatively affect the taste of the ice. It does have a built-in cleaning cycle which is very simple to do (5 cups water with a teaspoon of bleach, then it does a special automated cleaning procedure, then you let it rinse & drain a few times and put it back into ice-making mode...only takes a few minutes every month).

I would say a mac book pro 2016 for me as well as a subscription of an online learning sites so that I can skip schools to play video games while doing very well in math xd. Does it count? Still remember I skipped 3 weeks of classes and aced the matrix row operation exam.
