What is the purpose of piercings?

I will probably never understand their purpose. I'd like to clarify something: I don't look down on people who get them, I understand it's their choice. However, I don't see the beauty or intrigue of having someone puncture your ear and placing jewelry in it. This goes for girls as well as guys, although for girls I can understand the whole peer-pressure aspect of it.

Can someone explain why people pierce their ears (or hell, any part of their body - especially those who pierce strange, far off regions of their body)?

Alot of people have a need to stand out. The whole be different by being the same thing. Some strangely enough enjoy the pain ofdoing such. Also certain piercings end up having a use (you know which ones). And then some times there's people who I doubt even they understand why they get them.

Mostly I think alot of people don't wish to interact normally with the rest of society, so they get piercings to seperate them. All I know is at an interview for a VP position at a large company, the person without the eyebrow piercing is more likely to get the job.

I think people get piercings because it is the cool thing to do. That is why I got some. I grew into not enjoying them and now I don't wear any.
As far as women wearing them. I think some look good. I only know of one woman though that had an eye brow piercing that I liked. Could have been that I liked it because I liked her though???
And tongue piercing or not, I totally enjoy the act some of you are referring to regardless of whether or not the girl has one.

For girls I'm relatively sure it's mostly an aspect of peer pressure, fashion, and the fact that it's the traditional thing to do.

For myself-Male-both ears pierced it's mostly for reasons of fashion and that I think it looks good on me and and to a much letter degree a desire do be slightly different then the norm.

Well, I got my navel pierced when I was 28 (5 years ago) and it wasn't because of peer pressure, fashion, etc. I don't know any one my age who has one, although I am sure there are others. It was more an expression of acceptance for my imperfect body.... a wedding ring for the poor tummy that I always rejected and reviled.

I finally got the the point where I could look at my body and say, &quot;You know what? You look pretty good, and you deserve some more jewelry&quot;. I've always had a bit of the belly dancer/harem girl/islander thing going on... I've always liked the look of navel jewelry, way before it was 'popular'. I've always gone for 'exotic', whether it is Asian, Indian, African, Balinese... that's just what I feel good in.

So, even though the Mister was against it and my oldest child about had a conniption (Mom, only BAD people do that!) I went and had it done. I have worn it almost continually ever since... I took it off for about 3 weeks when I was about to have my last baby but as soon as I had him I popped it right back in. And as I continue to work out and do my crunches, I plan to buy a diamond for it in the near future (I have a plain gold ring now).

On the outside, I am very conventional (well, mostly). I have made the choice to be conventional but it is a choice I have made for my husband and children. I live a very upper-middle class suburban kind of life, but I am really a bohemian deep inside. The ring reminds me of my more creative and unconventional side, and the qualities that I have to cover up in order to fit in with society. It also reminds me that my body is beautiful. I think it looked really cool when I was 9 months pregnant! And as I get in better shape as the days go by, it reminds me that I am resilient.

I love my belly! But that's just me and my reasons.

it keeps the superficial people from bothering you:

if you a guy with an earring, people who are superficial and judge you based on your appearance will not want to have anything to do with you. Those who are genuine will not care that you have an earring.

I agree on the asshole repellant, don't really understand that second part.

To me, a girl with pierced ears and a pierced naval is hot (but they HAVE to have a flat stomach, or it's nasty). But on the asshole repellant topic, sometimes the guys that get their ears pierced are the assholes doing it to be &quot;cool&quot; (see Icyhotstunaz).

cuz I like it I have a tongue ring and a belly butotn ring. But I don't jsut pierce it, I stretch my tongue ring, it's at a 6 gauge right now.
