I want to buy a mouse pad for my mx-1000. I want the SMOOTHEST, not just a good one. Thanks

I don't really understand why you want a mouse pad for an optical mouse to begin with... are you using it on a wood-grain desk or something? I haven't used a mousepad since the optical mice came out

Basically a pad will help keep the underside from getting gunky buildup. If you look at the MX1000 underbelly you'll see four little oval shaped pad-like feet (dunno what to call them really) on the bottom of the mouse. Two near the top and two on bottom. Those will get buildup on them from a dirty surface over time. Not a huge deal but it looks kinda icky. A pad will help avoid this. So will cleaning the desk/table surface top too. ::chuckle::

I've got one of those for my mx1000, plays beautifully. The surface is slightly textured to improve tracking, but it does nothing to slow down the mouse movement, i just tap the mouse lightly and it slides 4 or 5 inches at least.

Another vote for Xtrac, although I have only used the Hybrid model. Coupled with clean teflon feet (either tape or built-in), the mouse just glides. Make sure you have enough desk space, though, as many Xtrac models tend to be quite large.

I too have one of the Func pads... it's seen nearly a year of use and there's no sign of wear. Very happy with it.

3M precise Mousing surface Pads are real thin (20# paper thin) and stick to your desk...work real well if you have to have one, otherwise you can buy teflon feet on-line.

that 3m mousing surface is a nice one , I've got one of those and loved it for an old ball mouse. But when I went laser , I just got a nice Black one with the Gel wrist pad for comfort..you'll find the underside of your mousepad gets dirty after a while. but your optical / laser mouse will love it.

sheet of white paper, typed to at its ends to hold it in place. easy to replace and costs you only about a few pennies.

fUnc pads are always good. It's smooth and slick (too slick for my personal preference). I've also had the xtrac pads (cloth) and they're nice (my friend had the hammer so I tried that too).

In the end, it's a matter of preference. If you want the slickest pad, you won't be dissapointed with the fUnc (rough side!). But make sure that's what you want. Remember, slick doesn't always mean accurate.

Man, that is a GREAT option.....if you're in the ghetto.

Please don't tell me you have the rig in your sig and are using some paper for your mouse pad.

Screw mousepads. You can run optical mouses on like anything. Heck, I can use my mouse on my demin jeans for gods sake.

But yea, paper or glass man. I'd go get glass at like Home Depot or something.

If I'm thinking of the same pad, I had one that warped.

I have a MX-1000 laser, and plain glass doesn't work at all with it -- I've tried a couple of different pieces, and couldn't get any mouse movement. (The thinnest I've tried was a photo frame cover, several mm thick -- I think these are either too thick or too reflective to work; probably too reflective.)

Paper can vary, but random samples don't feel all that smooth. (Photo paper is awful.)

My wood-grained IKEA desk works fine, and is smoother and better than most surfaces.

Glossy magazine covers are one of the few things that are smoother than the others and also work.

(The wireless performance, Setpoint software, and overall performance might make this the last Logitech mouse that I buy, if I have much of a choice.)

Yeah, right now i have the plastic cover off of a notebook taped to my desk, and teflon pads. I have a feeling the plastic is too rough because the pads wear out pretty quick and i lose my slick surface really fast. I say the slicker the better, and if those xtrac pads or whatever are really slick, then ill go with one of those. Anyone have any suggestions on teflon pads other than the BFG really thin tape-like ones?

I think waxed paper is a bit thin and flimsy I think it would tear easily, especially if you accidentally put something rough on it..

I don't see a problem with this when I find it a lot smoother for the type of mouse I use to play RTS games.

I have found nothing close to this except for an extra large steel pad at Comp USA, drilled down to my desk. But I do other stuff on my desk, so I don't think I would want a peice of steel in my way. The smoothest mice I've encountered to fit my precision would be the Microsoft mice, they work well with multitasking for me.

"Man, that is a GREAT option.....if you're in the ghetto."

-you make it sound like you can do better than me. why don't you counter it then?
