My general opinions definitely do not apply to IT people, or people who work in manufacturing/construction/science

I can look all around downtown LA and it's significantly different than where you're at. I agree not everybody wears ties (esp. when they don't have to meet clients, OR if they work in a warehouse/manufacturing facility), but when they do IMHO it says alot (ie conservative style tie, outgoing, stripes, dots, flowers, etc). Same thing with a watch. Dunno about your specific watches/how I would respond to them, but you look at the watch: huge face, small face, leather, metal, does it match the rest of the outfit, how "busy" it is, etc.
I see a guy with a huge watch, flashy as balls, that says alot. I have a clean, "simple" watch and I feel it says alot about me (with matching conservative ties I suppose). Some people like old school clean watches, other people prefer more modern "hip" watches. And then I see some jackass wearing a gold watch with a silver belt and realize that he has no idea WTF he's doing.
Are you sure you weren't born a woman?
Seriously, I can't imagine ever having a thought about how I looked to someone else, or what something I had 'said about me'. The whole idea is utterly foreign to me.
Personal presentation can be the difference between getting a deal, and not getting a deal.
When it's part of your job, you have to look at things differently.
No, I'd just get a different job. Seriously, I am what I am...not gonna change that for a job (which I consider the least important aspect of a persons life).
Yeah, you're telling me. I thought they were overpriced when I bought them in May. And I supposedly got $10 off.Originally posted by: krunchykrome

Well, see you'd get a different job, I wouldn't. I am what I am too, and I'm not changing it for my job.
Paying attention to how you look isn't changing yourself or who you are.
Oh, I agree, a job isn't the most important aspect of life, it isn't in mine.

I've done a huge range of different things, but except for uniforms or safety equipment none have affected how I dress or groom. Soon I will be teaching, and I'll have to wear slightly nicer things (mostly just have to stop wearing shorts and sandals I suppose). Still would never consider spending any great amount on appearance...it just isn't important.

I wasn't trying to get down on you, sorry if it came across that way. You paying attention to how you look isn't changing yourself, because you care. For me it would be change because I don't. It's just a personality/opinion thing is all...there is no right or wrong. I think most people are somewhere between the two poles of obsessed and don't care. I just happen to be so extreme to one side that I can't even remotely relate.

So a little over 2000.
I like to look nice and the ladies in the office like it. I'm only 27 compared to everyone else in the company who are in their late 40's to mid 50's. I figured at first I had to look professional so they would take me seriously because of my age. No one would do that if i came into meetings and was the only one not in a dress shirt or tie. After being here for a few years i've earned their respect, but I still like to dress professionally.
People judge you on your appearance...whether you like it or not...that just how it is.
