Man, and I thought I had problems. Some of the people on here are just soldiers to go through what they've gone through. Kidney stones in particular sound absolutely horrible...I cringe at the thought.

I guess I'm #4 on here to have Crohn's Disease. Along with the constant lower stomach pain and nausea, my flareups include massive bleeding when going to the bathroom. I've also had 2 anorectal abcess and 1 anorectal fistula surgery. I have to live in fear everyday thinking "Am I going to sh1t out a bunch of blood this time" god its the worst damn feeling ever. I guess things could be a lot worse though.

For all the people who have been to the hospital and wondered "why me", I have great sympathy for you. These bad things should not happen to anyone, but it's all worth it in the end when you're feeling well. Well wishes to everyone.

I knew something was up. One day, I was feeling some sinus pressure, then all of a sudden, it felt like I had been stabbed in the face. The pain was amazing. I seriously wanted to die! I went to the ER and they said, "You have something growing in there! You need to see a specialist!" I went to a EN&T specialist, and they found a golf ball sized growth in my sinus, and it had broken though the wall of skull! 8-0 Seriously, I'll throw my hat in with childbirth or passing stones! (Although I don't slight either one. I DON'T want to trade!)

Luckily it wasn't cancerous, so they were able to go under my lip to get most if it out. They had to take out my right eye to get the rest! I had some crazy Frankenstein stiches on the bridge of my nose near my eye. Got to make some fun "Knife fight" stories.

I also got the treat of having my sinus packed and having the packing removed, which I heard was TERRIBLY painful, but I guess I got lucky. I was shaking like a leaf when they were ready to pull, but it came out with no problem...

I had another scare a few years ago, where I went back for a checkup, and there was another golfball sized growth in the hole that was left from the surgery. Luckily, it was just a pus pocket (Ewww!) that formed in the hole. They had to drill a HOLE IN MY SKULL, in the sinus cavity, to act as a drain. Oddly enough, that sounded worse than it felt, but it was no picnic.

I don't know if this is the most painful, but I think you win the thread award for the sheer most nasty medical problem.

Good God! Hope everything turns out well for you.

120v, 400 Hz while working on a gyro was probably the most unpleasant. The weirdest was when I totalled my Ford F150, and my bottom teeth went through my bottom lip when I hit the steering wheel, and I didn't feel a thing. The most pain I've ever been in was stomach cramps that put me in the hospital for 3 days on my first ship. Having the damn hose up my nose didn't help either.

I dunno if he wins nastiest/stragest medical problem. My junior year of college I was on a water sampling trip (I worked for an envronmental chemist) and was hiking on a trail in the shenandoah valley. Another student was also hiking with me. I had my shirt off, and the other student asked me what was going on with my right shoulder. He told me it looked really swollen and jutted stragely out of my side. It didn;t hurt, so I didn;t think much of it. When I went home, however, I took my shirt off to take a shower and couldn;t help but notice that I had a very large lump (about the size of a large grapefruit) underneath my arm (basically in my armpit). It was very late, and again, it didn;t hurt, so I went to bed thinking I would deal with it in the morning. I woke up at 2am with the worst case of "dead arm" (i.e. the pins and needles feeling you get when you sleep on your arm) in my right arm. I went into the bathroom, and was shocked to see that this thing under my arm had continued to grow. I was now the size of a canataloupe.

I immediately got dressed and had my girlfriend drive me to the hospital. When I got to the hospital, I had about a dozen doctors come in to see me, and none of them had ever seen anything like what was going on under my arm. Eventually they decided to drain this thing, and ended up removing about 1200cc (thats 1.2 LITERS) of yellowish brown liquid from it. They told me to go home, and if it came back to call a general surgeon. 2 days later the thing had returned, only TWICE as big. I went to the general surgeon. He drained it again, but because he didn;t know what it was, he sent me to another surgeon in town. The second surgeon also didn;t have a clue as to what it was, but asked me if he could take pictures. After seeing two more surgeons, I was eventually sent down to UVA medical center in Charlottesville on an emergency appointment.

I knew something was funny when I walked into this Doctor's Office and was immediately sent to an examination room, even though there were ~30 other people waiting in the waiting room. The surgeon I came to see came in with about 12 medical students, all of whom got to poke and prod this thing under my arm (It was back again). I then had a fluroscopy, a full body CT scan, and a 6.5 hour long MRI. Even after all that testing the Docs were still not exactly sure what was causing my problem, but they knew it had to b fixed and scheduled me for surgery the next day.

The surgery went fine (obviosuly, because I'm writing this). It took three surgeons 4.5 hours to remove this thing from my armpit. BAsically they said that my right scapula is misaligned, and was rubbbing against one of the the lymph ducts underneath my right shoulder. As the wall of the duct weakened from the rubbing, it expanded outward and filled with lymph fluid (the yellow green stuff). At the protrusion filled with lymph fluid, it ballooned out like a liquid filled sausage casing and evenutally wound itself all around the nerve cluster that runs from my right shoulder down my arm. The reason it took so long to remove is because the doctors were trying to minimize nerve damage. Even with all their care, the nerves in my should were damaged minorly. To this day (almost 7 years later) I have no feeling in the underside of my arm from my armpit all the way to my wrist. I do have a neat 13 inch scar under my arm though.

Well, there was that 4 hour layover when all the TVs in the airport were tuned into CNN...swear to god my eyes and ears almost started bleeding!

Seriously though, worst pain I've ever felt was getting what I believe was a hairline fracture in my shinbone. I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of one of my kittens getting into trouble in the kitchen, and it sounded like she was about to knock a bunch of glass off the counter, so I leapt out of bed in a dead run towards my bedroom door.

Unfortunately, I tripped on a pile of laundry, and crashed full-speed into the door--the door was open, and I managed to hit it flush on the side, shin-first, just right so that it didn't give one way or the other. My upper shin caught the full force of the blow, just about two inches below my knee, and by the time I hit the ground, it was swollen the size of a baseball and purple. I've never felt pain like that in my life. When I limped back to bed, I couldn't even put a sheet over my leg because it was so tender. My stubborn ass didn't go to the doctor though, and now, 6 months later, I still have a sizeable lump on that part of my shin, and it's still rather tender to the touch.

I broke my thumb once many years ago. That was pretty painful. My broken ankle didn't hurt as bad as the thumb did.

I think this might even beat kidney stones (never had em). When I was 14 doing my early morning paper route I got this sharp pain in my balls, like I?d been kicked in the sack. I adjusted but to no avail it got progressively worse until I couldn?t bare it. I threw all the papers out of my basket and pushed home with one leg. I crawl up the front steps and knock on the door my mom finally opens the door and yells at me for forgetting my key (4am). She realizes I am in excruciating pain and helps me on the couch and calls 911, meanwhile my dog jumps on my crotch. So I get to the ER and a doctor comes and informs us I have Twisted Testicle and he is going to try and manually untwist it otherwise I need surgery ASAP. Well I needed surgery luckily I didn?t loose anything. However, the recovery wasn?t pleasant either so basically my balls are now stapled to me sack.

I have never told anyone this story; it hurts just thinking about it.

They say it can happen to anyone at any time.

Summary:
Twisted Testicle FTW!

Straightening my broken arm out for an x-ray, probably. That's the only time I've cried because of pain other than when I was a youngin'.

Easily a migraine. You know how they say pain is mental ? Yeah, that's as mental as it gets. Seriously. I'm sure people have said this... you just want to die.

I used to get a lot of them until I found the trigger.

I was just going to post Pleurisy myself. I suffered from it a couple times and have not had an attack for several years now, but the first time was horrible. My wife nearly killed me driving to the hospital as we both thought I was having "The big one".

It started as an almost unnoticable pain in the chest, and progressed the next morning to unbearable pain that awoke me from a deep sleep. I recall sleeping standing up in the corner for no less than 3 days before the pain medication started working and swelling finally went down it was so damn painfull.

After the first time, I would get it again nearly every year in the winter for the next several years. It was never as bad as the first time, but when I would start feeling that "twinge" in my chest, I knew it was coming....

the first time was my fault. my head was on the wrong side for an open field tackle. i've got video of it showing the arm getting pulled all the way back. it didn't hurt, it was just a strange new feeling that told me something was wrong. but i got it put back in on the sideline.

the second time was about ten minutes later. we were on offense on the goal line and something weird happend. i don't remember what, but i knew that my arm was out.

the third time was definately the worst. second play of the game. some duche from gary andrean purposely went for my shoulder. i had gotten around him and went to pursue the ball. next thing i know is my arm is being lifted up and he basically tackles me and lands on my shoulder. i had a shoulder brace on but that didn't help. he dented the ball of my shoulder and i had to get major surgery a month later because of it.

the worst pain was when they put the thing back in. the doctors put a sheet around my chest, had two people pull the chest, and had one pull my arm. i just remember the first pull due to the drugs, it was like being burned from the inside out.

lets hear yours

Wow, that is a hard one for me.. cause I have chronic pain. I would have to say it is a toss up between severe neck and back pain.. the crippling kind. (had neck surgery about 8-9 years ago, due for low back surgery now), and giving childbirth without any pain medication.

One day I decided to go to the beach with some friends. I asked them to make sure I didnt sleep in the sun for too long because my sunblock was very weak.

They forgot I was sleeping on the beach and I slept for about 6 hours ( I dont know how).

I woke up and I was like OMG. It didnt hurt at first. Then a couple hours later I started to feel the pain.

I told my buddies it was time to head home at this point. The 3 hour ride home was hell.

At this point my whole body was burning and I felt very ill. Here is the worst part. I told my friends I would be OK so they left me by myself.

I wasnt thinking when I told them this because my gf was on vacation with her parents and my mother was on vacation as well.

I could not lay down because anything that touched me hurt like hell. I stood in my room for 8 hours until I could get ahold of my father who lives in DE.

I forgot to mention that my face starting leaking. I had blisters under my first layer of skin. Basically it felt like zits were being popped on my face and then liquid would just pour out of it. It was very disgusting. I couldnt wipe the liquid off my face because it hurt to touch it.

My father shows up and takes me to the emergency room where they give me a rx for predisone and pain meds. I ended up having 2nd degree burns on my face and body and apparently I am now at a greater risk of skin cancer.
