What is this $299 6800GT

Is that brand any good? I get the impression 300 is becoming the new price for GTs. PNY GTs have been 330 for a while now.

Unfortunately for some of us, its the AGP version. PCI-E 6800GTs still hover around the $380 mark the last time I checked, and the X800XL delivers the approximately the same performance for about $100 less.

Not for this AGP user. 6800GT didn't work well for me so I went with an XL.

I was under the impression that all cards simply displayed an image on the screen (different ways of doing it of course).

Good price though.... im going to wait until next gen and then upgrade my entire system to dual core and all that good stuff.

It depends on what you want out of a card.

If you want about as fast performance and 2003 functionality for $80-$100 less, an X800XL meets those criteria.

If you want the option to add a second card for SLI, to see EXR HDR in Far Cry, to see soft shadows in Riddick, to play Splinter Cell in SM3 instead of SM1, or to play Doom3/Quake 4/RTCW2 well, the $80-$100 might be worth it to you. (not to mention future games that MIGHT be SM3/nV features only*)

*It's never good to guess the future, in this case the present is fortunately enough to guide us.

I see the X800XL as sort of a "9800Pro MAXX"- it runs most games about as fast as a 6800GT and is a little cheaper, but it's core feature set was news in 2003, not 2005. You save that money because the market won't bear a similarly priced X800XL- no one would buy a card with similar speed and far fewer features for the same money.
The 6800GT PCIE costs more because it's worth more.

It wouldn't run with FW on. All other cards I've had in the last 4 years have run with FW on no problem (both ATI and NV). That's just ONE example. Not to be a smartass or anything...

On topic though, that is a great price for the 6800GT. And I know that my problem was not universal to all 6800GTs out there.

I guess now is the time for the remaining high-end AGP users to upgrade, there are 2 super value cards to be had. :beer:

As Rollo said, its costs more because its worth more. Thats about as simple as you can put it.

In PCIE the price difference is much more debatable and means less.

ATI cards = AGP cards more expensive than PCI-E (x800xl)
nVidia cards = AGP cards are less expensive than PCI-E (6800GT)

While SM3 capabilty was added in DX9C, it is not required, so the X800s have full compliance with DX9C.

On topic, it does seem the competition from the X800XL has brought the 6800GTs down quite a bit, this can only be a good thing! A question though, do most high end nvidia cards come from a handful of card makers in the way sapphire makes most of the high end ati cards? if so shouldnt this card be of equal quality (of build, maybe not testing) as higher priced cards?

Nonetheless, supply/demand sets the price and when X800XLs came out they were more than 6800GTs. If the demand was there at that price, they would still sell for that. Retailers care about themselves, not us. They sell for what they can.
