BCMB is not just Molecular bio. It's an umbrela degree plus alot more lab work.
no kidding

in any event, this thread is pointless because everyone will inflate and exaggerate the difficulty of their majors.

for example, those of you not familiar w/ bio lab reports (1st and 2nd year bio courses do not count) should understand that individuals claiming to write 30 page lab reports are full of sh!t. the reports are really less than 5 or 6 pages single spaced with an assload of diagrams, graphs, and works cited. even most cutting edge research papers published in journals as prestigious as nature biotech are only a couple of pages long. of course, PI's are limited in the space they are allotted for their submissions and tend to shorten the original report. but having worked for 2 years in a renowed lab in school and having seen first hand what's involved in publishing papers (we've published more than 35) i can tell you that 30 page lab reports are few and far between. if you're writing 30 page lab reports as an undergrad you're just being stupid and giving an elementary and unnecessary introduction and writing out definitions for each of the terms as if you were writing for a high school audience. either that, or you're using 16 font and 2.5" line spacing.

that being said, the most difficult major is sports philosophy. end of thread.

True. But generating those diagrams and graphs takes an assload of time.

Good post.. if your labs are 30 pages long, you have a problem with communicating your ideas effectively with your audience. How inclinded would YOU be willing to pick up a 30 page report and read it?

Interesting major you stated. Reasons?

I believe that in a general sense, Chemical Engineering is supposed to be the most difficult major. Perhaps things have changed now.

but if
1) people are greedy
2) top business majors get really high paying jobs
3) the people that actually do business aren't academically gifted

then where are all the damn smart people following the money

Depends on the school. For us (Cal) it is generally agreed to be EECS (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science).

I've seen a lot of the physics-type problems EEs have to go through.

They're easy compared to the crap I went through.

OTOH, physics people don't have to put up with the workload.

That said, when it comes to subject matter difficulty, it's probably physics > chem eng > *

though when it comes to being "tough", probably architecture > chemE > EE > *. architecture workload >> *

 lol, owned. i was going to post that, but let someone else do the damage.

undergraduate business degrees are as useless as reading glasses for a blind man.

i forgot where i saw this, but in looking for good mba programs i found the following statistic:
business undergrads accepted to top 10 business schools < 2%
engineering undegrads accepted to top 10 business schools ~ 18%

it would be interesting to see how many business grads are accepted into graduate engineering programs. i bet it's safe to say that it's 0%

I'm a freshmen, and doing Mechanical Engineering. Sometimes, I feel like just dropping it and going into business.

Something though... just keeps me going. Not sure what.

I'd have to guess ChemE or Mathematics.

Now, which is the hardest to get a PhD in?

That was more in part due to the science of physics and chemistry, which is the point that I'm trying to get across.

History retells the story of what happened in the past. For example. Science and Chemistry gives you the pills that you eat, the water you drink. The buildings you live and work were designed by civil engineers.

Given that science and engineering play such a vital role in our lives, how can history possibly compare? Please assist me in providing a daily application of history that makes it so important/worthwhile to persue.

I'm sorry but you just don't seem to grasp what I'm saying. ALL of the fields you mention rely on information and principals that were discovered in the past. Some in the distant past, some very recently.

Keeping track of all that stuff, rediscovering things that have been forgotten, sorting out the truth from the fiction, these are all things that a history major might be learning how to do.

And it applies to all fields, includng science, technology, medicine. You seem to think history is only about politics and governments, well that's just completely wrong.

Without history, you would have absolutely no science or engineering at all. The same thing as the other field I mentioned, communication. And by communication I mean all of the fields that advance human communication, including languages, the arts, music, political science, etc.

All of these things are at least as important as any other field of study, in some ways more so, because they are the building blocks of the other fields of study, like math, science, medicine, engineering.

I  history. I just  math and science a little more.

If I won the lottery though, I'd probably add a bachelor's in history to my list.

Which doesn't change the fact that history is one of the easier majors out there.

"Which doesn't change the fact that history is one of the easier majors out there. "

I was responding to a post where someone didn't see the value of history.

As far as the discussion of which major is harder, that's a stupid discussion. Some fields are not just hard, they're impossible, if you don't have the ability.

Engineering in general is one of those fields where hard work can make up for marginal ability. That doesn't mean it's harder, it just means there are more marginal people slogging through it than there are in some other fields.

EE/CompE isn't that tough in pure difficulty. it's just the workload that gets to you. the courseload is heavy and it's full of projects.
