It's the ceremonial slaughtering of rock'n'roll in the name of Jebus, aka "mm hey guys... if we rock out with our bible out, the kidzz will join us"

Youtube "Hillsong United"...probably the biggest name in "worship music" currently...

And no, it's not a mid-western thing. It is all over the wrold (Hillsong is from Australia with branches around the world) and US in contemporary/modern worship services.

Worship music can also be differentiated from mainstream contemporary Christian music which is more suited for concerts rather than singing along and worshiping.

imho the best thing to ever come out of Hillsong is Brooke Fraser. If you could even say that, as I think honestly she's more of a guest musician.

Brooke is stunning, beautiful, sweet, smart, and can sing like you wouldn't believe. I love her work in Hillsong, but her personal, non worship music is really good. Her voice is so sweet, I often put her cd's on when I go to sleep. It's like having an angel sing to you. Seriously.

She's very authentic. Probably one of my most favorite musicians right now, and I honestly like a lot of speed metal.. I can go from listening to Slayer, Dimmu Borgir.. to her.

So, the mere mention of religion will kill rock'n'roll? Good thing the 'straights' never thought of that when my generation created it.

It does seem like a watering down of a genre thats supposed to be rebellious and a bit raunchy by nature. It's like the music no longer matters as much, just the message. It's false. It's not rock for rocks sake, but "rock for Jesus". It's like a group of people decided that rock music is good and they like it, but at the same time found it morally repugnant and had to synthesize a version more acceptable to them. In the process they took away what made it good to start with by hamstringing it a using it to drag along their tired old message. The result is a bevy of indistinguishable artists writing indistinguishable songs over indistinguishable harmonies.

I won't say that there aren't some standouts in this genre though. I rather like skillet, red, and a few others. Still, I find most of it to be bland and soulless, which seems incredibly ironic given the material.

I have no patience for Christian rock. It's watered down, ripped off real rock, with Jesus inserted in strategic places. Like Pearl Jam? Then check this out! You'll LOVE Jesus Jam!!

Damn, if we had that maybe I would not have quit church at 13!

its still relatively boring. i grew up in a "non denominational" church and i still hated the fucking place. better music than just hymns, i guess. they also got into jam sessions which were boring

/i mean, at least if youre listening to phish jam youve probably got a good buzz going

I've seen some churches where they'll have electric guitars and stuff regularly. There's this one I had visited where the youth group had a whole band and all. Drums, guitars, keyboard you name it and they'd usually play the music during the hymns. Church does not have to be boring.

Christian rap can be interesting too.

I am on a bunch of guitar and music related forums and a lot of the posters talk about "worship gigs" and such. These are guys with really nice electric guitars and amps.

Seems like a mid-western thing. Do churches really have gigs with loud guitars and stuff? Growing up Catholic the only instrument we had was the organ.

Yes was pretty common with my church too.

Weird. A lot of the "ess" sounds Brooke makes come out like "esh".

It's like normal music, except that, rather than dancing to the music, people close their eyes, hold their hands in the air, and sometimes cry despite the fact that the music is usually worse than any teen-pop drivel in the past 50 years.
