What is "worship music"?

I am on a bunch of guitar and music related forums and a lot of the posters talk about "worship gigs" and such. These are guys with really nice electric guitars and amps.

Seems like a mid-western thing. Do churches really have gigs with loud guitars and stuff? Growing up Catholic the only instrument we had was the organ.

A lot of church youth groups and such use religious bands for small concerts, gigs, etc. I don't think its uncommon. Plus, I think Christian youth doesn't care for the old style, badly off key orchestral psalms their parents used to sing in church.

it's generally similar to the stuff somebody would normally play on a piano, i think. they just lightly rockify it.

Worship music can be anything from old hymns with a backbeat to KISS covers where "Jesus" replaces any references to sex, drugs, satan, etc.

It's a pretty lucrative business for musicians who play popular instruments where there's a lot of competition. Guitar, piano, drums, stuff like that.

How "loud" the guitar is will vary from occasion to occasion. (Remember, it was our lame-ass grandparents who invented Rock 'n' Roll. Death Metal it ain't, but still way hipper and more approachable than Bach for most people.)

It's for Christians who want to listen to contemporary styles of music without feeling guilty about it. Some of it's pretty good, but some of it is that "My god is an awesome god" type shit too.

Youtube "Hillsong United"...probably the biggest name in "worship music" currently...

And no, it's not a mid-western thing. It is all over the wrold (Hillsong is from Australia with branches around the world) and US in contemporary/modern worship services.

Worship music can also be differentiated from mainstream contemporary Christian music which is more suited for concerts rather than singing along and worshiping.
