I'd call myself very well versed with many many topics, but probably not an expert in anything yet.

Same

Then again I don't think any 25 year olds can call themselves an expert in anything, except the very rare outliers.

The term expert gets thrown around too much. I consider an expert someone who's in the top few percent in their particular discipline. That being the case, I'm an expert in nothing.

I wouldn't call myself an expert but there are a couple things at 25 that I wouldn't be surprised if other people called me in expert in.

Specifically trauma nursing, and placing intravenous access/drawing blood/anything phlebotomy wise. I'm that person that other nurses come to whenever they can't draw blood from you and generally I'll get you on the first attempt.

That being said I'm still learning a few tricks of the trauma nursing trade, however I know a lot more then at least 98% of my nursing co-workers at my job when it comes to adult trauma nursing.

On this board, rock climbing.

I also know/knew a bunch about angiogenesis, FWIW.

Any PhD candidate would be an expert in their specific field.

Wut? In no way is a PhD candidate considered an expert by default. Even a PhD graduate wouldn't necessarily be considered an expert, but a student? No.

In order to get a PhD, you have to take a field and expand some small part of it to discover something new. That means that for some very narrow focus, you have become the world's expert.

Another way to look at it:

Only 23, don't consider myself an expert in anything, although I am knowledgeable in a bunch of different fields.

That's primarily what my job is though. As a general construction field engineer (just a title, not a P.E.) I'm supposed to be a jack of all trades, master of none. Know enough so that when I'm out in the field I can spot a big mistake or deviation from the plans in a second, but for something more intense (electrical) I have to go back to the plans/specs for a consult.

Patent law, specifically patent prosecution, due diligence, and client counseling. I also know a fair amount about licensing IP.

Your statement is logical, but it is too general to reflect reality. I know a lot of folks with PhD's. Some are smart. Some are dumber than a box of rocks. Thus, saying that "any" PhD candidate (or even "any" PhD) is an exeprt in their field is accurate.

While in college, I had a 4.0 in bars, beer and girls.

A 2.3 in C.E. Who knew there weren't employment opportunities in BB&G?

Was quite good at dropping in arterial lines into quite difficult spots.... drawing blood from anywhere/anytime was cake.

Dated a girl that worked at the V.A. Watched her draw a tube from a vein(not visible) in a guys finger. How she felt it with gloves on is beyond me.
