I know a guy that kept getting 'Fly Cheap' spam from some company. They asked to be removed via a phone call as these messages came once every couple hours and were coming from multiple domains, with multiple titles...it was being sent to all their users.
anyway I don't know all the details of what lead to the end...but in the end it was found that the fly cheap guy was running a default apache/linux box with no security. The admin got in and proceeded to change all his files to things like 'This file flew cheap with "FLYCHEAP.COM" (not the real name), This file is in Hawaii thanks to FLYCHEAP.COM, This file loves SPAM, etc.
He was able to delete other files off networked machines.
It was a couple months before the domain came back online and he never got another spam again.
