This was for the main system. I shuffled some of these down into secondary systems as I upgraded. Starting with my 8MHz Mac SE:
M68000, 486DX4-120, P166MMX, Celeron 300A, PIII-650 Coppermine, Duron 1GHz Morgan, AthlonXP 2200+ TBred-A (bad choice), Athlon XP 2500+ Barton, Athlon64 3200+ Venice, Athlon64 3500+ Venice, C2D E6300 (3.1 GHz at less than stock voltage; I'm keeping this one for a while ).

If you count laptops and extra PCs I've also had:
K6-2 400, Celeron 700 Coppermine (66Mhz bus but an easy OC to 1050MHz), Duron 1.8GHz Applebred, Pentium-M 1.5GHz, AthlonX2 3800+ Manchester, C2D E4300.

EDIT- just remembered 2500+ was a Barton

I think my very first CPU was a intel 486(?) then a 500MHz Pentium 2 > 1.8GHz Athlon XP, now I'm on 2.0GHz Athlon 64 single core.

I'm still deciding what's powering my next rig. I'm still torn between Phenom and Intel Quad cores even though I know Intel mops the floor with them.

As far as I can remember, and not necessarily always in chronological order:

Intel 386
Intel 486
Intel Pentium 100MHz
Intel Pentium 166MHz // ATI Rage Pro, 3Dfx Voodoo 1, 3Dfx Voodoo 2
Intel Pentium II 333MHz // NVIDIA Riva TNT 2 Pro
Intel Pentium III 500MHz // NVIDIA Riva TNT2 M64
Intel Celeron 500MHz @ 700MHz+ // Matrox G450 DH, ATI Radeon 7500
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ // ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160 @ 3.0GHz // NVIDIA Geforce 9600GT

I still have great memories of each stage and the things I was able to do with each system. They were never top notch (always low-end to mid-range for the time) but I always pushed them to the limit. But the two systems which I felt were "very" fast were the Athlon XP 2400+ and the E2160. Maybe this is an indication that CPU power is advancing faster than what the average "semi-power user" needs...

Wow, nice thread. This is just to see how old we all are...

6502 .................3.6MHz, 8 bit.........................Atari 400 and 800
8080 .................2.0MHz, 8 bit.........................My first build. Built up the whole board as a project.
MC68000 ..........8MHz, 16/32bit......................Original Macintosh.
MC68030 ..........20MHz, 32 bit........................Macintosh IIsi
PPC 601 ...........100MHz.................................Macintosh 7500
PPC 604 ...........300MHz.................................My first CPU upgrade on the same PC. Went from 100MHz to 300MHz. Not bad.
PPC G3 .............233MHz.................................Original bondi blue iMac.
PPC G3 .............400MHz.................................Powerbook G3 "Pizmo" (bronze). We still use this machine daily running OSX!!
Athlon 900 ........900MHz................................My first component build PC. Great machine. Still in service today.
Celeron 600 ......600MHz................................I got two of these and they were crap...probably just crappy boards though. Gave them away.
AthlonXP 1800...1.5GHz................................."Palomino" Great CPU...NVidia NForce2 on all my XPs. Gave it away to a friend.
AthlonXP 2400...1.8GHz................................."Barton" Still in service as my dad's computer.
AthlonXP 2500...1.83GHz..............................."Barton" Overclocked up to 2.2GHz. Still in service in my son's computer.
Athlon64 3700...2.4GHz................................."Clawhammer" Never really happy with this chip, best stable OC 2.65GHz. Shelved it.
Opteron 165......1.8GHz.................................My first dual core ran it at 2.5GHz with water....Awesome OC, awesome CPU!! Still in service.
C2D 6750...........2.67GHz..............................OC to 3.6GHz on air. Awesome CPU....sitting at my feet right now.

There's a history lesson for you. Compiled mostly for my own fun as if anyone else cares. LOL!

Wow, I have very short CPU history compare to most since I try do upgrade only 4-5 years:

Pentium 166 Mhz > PIII 866 Mhz > AMD 64 3400+

I have E6750 for my HTPC, but thats not my Desktop main comp. Hoping for my next main Desktop upgrade at end of 2009!
