ummm.. doesnt this force the other side to get better by doing so?

Pentium II 266MHz
Pentium II 450MHz
Pentium III 1.0GHz
Pentium 4 2.0GHz
Pentium 4 3.0GHz
AMD X2 4200+
Core 2 Duo E6600
Core 2 Duo E8400

The two most noticeable jumps were P4 2.0 -> P4 3.0 (with Hyper Threading) and P4 3.0 -> X2 4200+ (dual core).

I am looking through all the replies here and I notice one chip that is missing in most people's lists: The Celeron 300 OC'd to 450. That was pretty much the first bargain overclocker that can hit 50% OC in the history of overclocking.

I'm getting old.

I never really considered the Commodore 64. I have fond memories of Oregon Trail in Grade School on that machine.

Ugh. Counting grade school, I've also used/learned/worked on:

Apple IIc
Apple IIe
Apple IIgs
Apple Mac classic, SE, SE30 et al.
386sx-16 and 33 intel
486-dx2 66
486-dx4 100 i think
few other 486s

I'll stop now.

Oregon trail was a great game and I vividly remember playing it on the early apple IIs. Distemper was the plague.

Lol, mine's almost all Intel. From reviews I've seen, Intel's better at mobile than AMD. Iirc, there should have been a K6 in that line-up (in between the PII and PIII) but that one died within months and the custom-builder I (or rather my parents) bought it from went out of business. I didn't buy AMD until after a long, long time.

Pentium 233 > Athlon T-bird 800 > Athlon XP 2000 > Athlon XP 3200 venice > Athlon 3800 x2 @ 2.4 > Core 2 duo 6750 @ 3.6

I'm sure there was one or two in there I'm missing for my home machine. For business use I've gone through dozens of different CPUs I never cared to remember.

Intel DX2 (66Mhz) -> AMD '586' overdrive chip as an upgrade (133Mhz, about as fast as a Pentium 83Mhz) -> AMD Duron 700Mhz @ 815Mhz -> AMD Duron 1.8Ghz @ 2.15Ghz -> AMD 2500+ Mobile @ 2.2Ghz... could never get that one 100% stable though -> AMD Athlon64 3000+ Venice @ 2.5Ghz -> AMD Opteron 165 @ 2.56Ghz -> a Phenom B3 in the very near future.

I've also had a few laptops in there, oddly enough all but one of my desktop CPU's have been AMD, all of my laptop CPU's have bee Intel. Right now I have a 1.8Ghz Pentium Mobile (Dothan core, 2MB cache)... it does perfectly fine for Office and internet type stuff.

AMD K5 233Mhz > Pentium II 400Mhz > Katmai Pentium 3 550Mhz > Coppermine Pentium III 700Mhz > Athlon XP 1600+ 1.4Ghz > Pentium 4 1.8a 1.8Ghz@400Mhz FSB Northwood > Pentium 4 2.4b 2.4Ghz@533Mhz Northwood > Pentium 4 640 3.2Ghz 800Mhz FSB Prescott > Pentium D 920 2.8Ghz > Core 2 Duo E6600 > Core 2 Quad Q6600

I didn't really get into overclocking until the Pentium 4 640, which I ran at 4.0Ghz, the Pentium D was at 4.0Ghz, the E6600 was at 3.0Ghz, and the Q6600 is currently at 3.0Ghz. The one exception to overclocking before the Pentium 4 640 was the Coppermine P3, which got overclocked to 933Mhz.

I've owned a few other CPUs in secondary system, but my main workhorse and gaming rig history is shown above. Here are some secondary system (mainly HTPC usage) CPUs I've used.

Athlon K7 800Mhz
AMD Opteron 180 socket 939 2.4Ghz@2.6Ghz (pitiful overclocker)
Core 2 Duo E2160 1.8Ghz overclocked to 2.4Ghz

My laptop history is much easier to recall, as I haven't been a laptop owner very long and don't upgrade them nearly as much.

Amd Mobile Sempron 3600+ > Intel Pentium M 1.7Ghz

Wow. I really miss the days of cpu's with no fan or heatsinks. Interestingly the only chips that failed/died prematurely were the cyrix and the P4.

CPU got always faster, OS got always worse. With the exception of C64. Cant reallys say it had an "OS"
Best OS and hardware (for its time) IMHO was AmigaOS, hands-down, followed by XP, followed by 98, Vista comes in last.
