This would be cool. I'd like it if the game could have more of a sandbox mode. I suck hard at RTSs, but I do enjoy building bases in them. I just never get anywhere because while I'm arranging my buildings and single-tasking, everyone else is steamrolling me. Having a "Sim Base" that is sort of like Sim City, where the emphasis is on building and maintaining a good base, might be fun. Battles would be decided less by micromanagement of individual units (which I simply cannot do, at all) but more by how well your base is managed and how well your forces are trained and equipped.

I mean, think about it. If you're the ultimate commander of an army, you're not telling your troops whether to take up a position on this hill or that one, or whether to advance 50 yards or stay put for now. That's the squad leader's job. The commander sets the main objectives, while the people under him look at things on a progressively smaller but deeper scale.

for a single player game (not sure where it would go for multiplayer, but read on)... my idea is this:
grand RTS combat, particularly modern combat style, but kind of fused with gameplay akin to Call of Duty 4, except with all unit types. Probably something similar to World in Conflict, but I'm thinking, larger-scale RTS than WiC (commanding more units), with the ability to jump down into FPS style combat, of any unit type presently in your command. I'm thinking you'd only have the option to jump into the shoes of the leader for whatever combat element you want to be. The game would basically then do combat simulation for the rest of the units, while you can continue to issue commands to the element you're within. So you jump down from RTS mode into a tank platoon and stick to only issuing commands of that tank PLT, and the game chugs away on autopilot for the rest of the combat force.

multiplayer would probably turn up like battlefield and just turn to shit, so I'd ignore it. I'd like to imagine it'd be something of a mesh between WiC and battlefield, but with the presentation of combat in COD4 (especially hardcore mode )... I think the only successful way online could be played out is if its kind of like WiC, where an individual player controls a couple battle elements and assorted units, and then they could jump into the shoes of one of the leaders, so there would also be bots. So I don't like that so much. Multiplayer would be interesting to see how it'd turn out.

I would love to see Wing Commander 4 with better graphics, and Vista and XP support. A new Space Quest game would be cool too. A new Tex Murphy game would be pure Awesomeness!

My first thought as well.

Stardock is working on that (although they couldn't get the rights to the name, so it will just be based on Master of Magic, with a different name.)

I want another game like Freespace 2.

And I want a game that blends the first person and RTS genres well. I'd like to be able to organize my armies, set up a battle, then fight in it as one of thousands of soldiers.

Edit: Actually, I just gave myself another idea. An RPG/FPS where you're a freelance mercenary in the middle ages. You get hired to fight in battle, you can roam the wilderness and towns, and you can eventually form your own army.

Another Tim Schafer game for the PC. Unlike Psychonauts, Brutal Legend looks like it's going to be console only

My dream game is a war-zone, like maybe an entire city (built to scale) that is under attack. This would be completely non-linear with a very wide variety of options to choose from. You can do something as simple as fighting in the front lines a la CoD, or you can do something more covert, or you can do whatever the hell you want. The trick would be that this massive battle is raging all around you, and you would have to overcome tremendous odds to alter the course of it all, seeing as how you're just one man. Of course you would also have the ability to rise up in rank by completing certain types of missions, and this would ultimately lend an RTS element to it all. You could still be fighting alongside your infantry though while it was all going on.

My dream game doesnt exist yet, probably couldnt exist yet with today's technology. Take the open endedness and sandbox world of GTA, but take away the guns. You have an objective, but you're given very little direct instruction in how to complete it, because its up to you to make it happen however you see fit. Your actions should have sensible repercussions, and you only get one "try" and you're forced to start over. Which isn't as bad as it sounds, since the experience should be unpredictable and different each time. The game ends when you've either completed your "mission" or failed to do so, but both should be enjoyable in their own way.

The game wouldnt necessarily revolve around guns, destruction and/or death of you and/or others unless you chose it to be so, but I'd prefer that to be as far from the focus as possible. Those you meet should be realistic enough to provoke a genuine emotional reaction. Ex. If you're driving down the street in a rush and decide to run that red and you smash into a minivan, and the mom is crying and screaming for her children, if you laugh and think "what a cool moment", it hasn't been done right.

Trying a game like this today would either have to be heavily scripted and thus far from unpredictable, or open ended with therefore limited interaction like well, the old standby, shooting people and getting shot back at.

Taking the total war concept to a massive scale.
Borders and countries that move and change.
Alliances that form and break.

That's what I was going to say. One of the things that I find really lacking in most RTS games is the lack of character development and continuity. When my troops level up, I'd like that to carry over to the next battle. And yea, MMORPG RTS on a massive scale would be awesome.

I want a new online Battletech game like Solaris 3025 with a persistent universe. If you get killed it matters. Play the way the original game envisaged were mercenaries would withdraw from battle when it was no longer profitable. Fighting to the death means starting over from scratch.

Baldur's Gate 3 would also be nice. Same with another Vampire the Masquerade game.

Master of Magic 2 would be nice, but as has already been mentioned Stardock has already been working on a simular fantasy game.

A new Panzer General and Fantasy General game would be nice. Bring back some great turn based games.

A Steel Panthers 4 would be great.

Agreed.

Also:

1. Co-op FPS - We had so much fun playing the original doom campaign at 3am over the modem. It's silly nobody ever includes one.

2. Stalker type MMORPG - Id love to see a game like wow that was based on fps concepts instead of damage speed. The ability to kill things of a higher level if you are quick and have good aim would be very cool.

3. A good solid adventure game. A game with an avatar that is just like a person and can fully interact with the world around them but then put into a good story.

Uh.

I think you're thinking of the mod for Rome Total War, Middle Earth: Total War, but the only official, licensed games were the craptacular BFME series which were so botched and miserable, it made me a sad panda. And they weren't using the Total War engine.

Other than that, I'm looking for the same game you described, but basically in full real time, which simultaneous zooming in and out of the battles and such.

Other than that, I just want some medieval RTS games that are actually good, more larger scale games and stuff.

In terms of FPS games, I'm more of a multiplayer guy, but I'd like to see more military shooters with a point, something like Armed Assault, but...better.

I'd like a nice cross between Armed Assault and Battlefield 2...and don't forget destructible environments.

RPGs...hrmm. Something like Assassin's Creed + Oblivion + Witcher.

Oh, did I mention Age of Empires 4 set in the ancient world in a massive style?

Or how about the new game Richard Goodman (Age of Empires 1, Empire Earth 1, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World) is working on right now. I can't wait to see what he's cooking up.

You start off on foot with basic weapons, a few NPC quests to get you started then 90% of quests are player made (eg, someone owns a mining operation and his supply lines are gettign raided, you take his contract to protect a shipment with a APC or light tank).

Player made cities that can be made anywhere.

Lots to do yourself, wars to wage (with logistics and politics like in EvE) with clans and no safe zones (similar to EvE). If the front lines of a major war shift to your city, then that city can be burned to the ground with you in it.

Start on a planet with several factions with different advantages and disadvantages (local government, inner sphere, rebels, bandits, clan, merc) related to skills and how easy it is to get/make stuff.

If game is a hit expand the game world to a solar system, if it continues to grow just keep adding solar systems. It would be nice to have it done like in EvE online, but the lag with so many people on one server would just kill the game.

I like this idea but I wish in my vision of the game the fights would play out more like Virtual-On, action packed, fast action rather than the standard, slow battles.

An epic zombie survival game. Let's see if Left 4 Dead is any good when it comes out.
