Current job: Miscellaneous engineer. Mostly mechanical design and refinement, but also a lot of electrical, and some microcontroller programming.
And some tech support, inventory management, product audits, quality control, production support....
I do get to play with some toys that cost a lot more than I could afford myself, but
being generally competent and capable can be hazardous. But I'd love to have some days when I can go more than 10 minutes (yes, really) without some kind of interruption.
Dream job: Maybe working on a fusion reactor, or a Gen IV fission reactor. One fusion design I heard about sounds rather interesting - it would pulse plasma next to some conductors in order to induce voltage directly, rather than going through the heat-to-steam-to-turbine conversion process. I don't remember the name of the design though, or if it was even truly feasible.
But based on
the chart posted here, working on a fusion reactor probably requires that you work for $10/hr, and not have any lofty hopes of making anything really functional anytime soon. I suppose having some manner of degree in nuclear
something or particle physics would help as well.
Or work on asteroid deflection technology, or (the canceled)
Project Prometheus.
So...really interesting high-tech stuff that stands to be extremely useful and beneficial, but which no one wants to fund.
