From where you are now, to where you want to be, what is your expected career path?

Mine is something like this:

Developer -> Senior Developer (currently) -> System Architect -> Director of IT -> CTO

1 man IT department > engineer

I'm starting college next year at 23 years old. It'll take me about 6 years to get out though. However, I don't think I want to do computer work the rest of my life.

After I get out and get a comission and come back into the Army.

Platoon leader --> Company XO --> Batallion Staff --> Company Commander --> Batallion Staff --> Batallion XO --> Batallion Commander --> Brigade staff --> Brigade XO --> Brigade Commander

Plus or minus several steps.

Engineer in Training>Junior Engineer>Senior Engineer>Supervisor>Manager>Higher level Manager>Senior vice President>Executive Vice President>COO

Obviously Its highly unlikely I will get past low level manager at best, but you can always hope eh?

I've always wondered how well upper middle/upper level army positions pay.

I didn't plan it this way, but it's pretty much going:

IT Support Monkey > IT Support Chimp > IT Support Orangutan

Hopefully eventually it will lead out of the IT zoo entirely, or at least out of the support side.

Mine is something like this:

Developer -> Senior Developer (currently) -> System Architect -> Director of IT -> CTO

You're missing a few levels there. Namely a manager position and a VP.

Me?

Consultant -> consultant -> consultant.

Management in my company is drastically separated from the technical side. A progression from Senior Developer or System Architect to Project Manager would stifle my career.

Bit of advice for you here....you will not get very far by being technical.

A progression to project manager to manager would ACCELERATE your career. You can reject this notion all you want. Technical skills are not what advances your career.

Analyst 1 -> Analyst 2 -> Analyst 3 -> Team Lead -> Project Manager 1 -> Project Manager 2 -> Project Manager 3 -> Senior Project Manager

Currently Analyst 1. But I could pretty easily leapfrog from Analyst 1 to Team Lead in a matter of a year or two. Then once you get to be a PM, it doesn't take that long to go from a PM1 to a PM3.

I'm speaking about my company, not the industry norm. There is nothing above Project Manager if you choose that track.

The pay is respectable, the benefits are amazing, and the retirement is almost unbeatable.
