What is your favorite game released this year?

For me, so far, it has to be Dawn of War II: Retribution.

The thing is that I bought The Witcher 2 from GoG.com about a week ago or so, and I have yet to install it since I still haven't finished the original which I also just recently bought from GoG (mainly due to the fuss surrounding The Witcher 2, admittedly, otherwise I never really wanted to play the original at all, but I gave it a go). After I finish the first I'll get to see what's that sequel all about, but for now yeah I'd say it's Retribution, and I do believe that Crysis 2 should get an honorable mention. Additionally, I think that despite its numerous issues and drawbacks Dragon Age 2 shouldn't be forgotten too fast either, the voice acting alone should grant it a noticeable seat somewhere within decency at worst.

When it comes to consoles (I.E console-exclusive, at least for now, perhaps it will change later this year and I do hope that it will) it has to be Mortal Kombat (2011). I've played it just last week-end at my cousin's place (360 version) and I absolutely loved it. It reminded me a lot of Mortal Kombat II which at that point I still believed was the best of the entire saga, but now that I've played that latest MK I have to say that it really is the best of them all, in my opinion, and if I had a 360 it would be an instant buy. I sincerily hope that it will be ported to the PC, not to mention that I bought the MadCatz fightpad for Street Fighter IV last year and I can't imagine the fun I'd have playing that new MK on that controller, thumbs up to NetherRealm Studios (Midway Games' legacy, also thanks Mr. Boon) for making a superb MK game, it took that many years to come back to its roots but finally we're there now.

As the thread title implies; what is your favorite game so far released in 2011? This applies to both PC and console games. This would also be a good place to discuss letdown's.

So far for me Portal 2 is it. The campaign was just perfect, in length and content. Level design is excellent, and the script/story is one of the most entertaining I have experienced in years. Not to mention it's an absolutely beautiful game despite running on an engine which was 1st released in 2004. The addition of co-op play added even more value to this already great game.

Dead Space 2 would come in a close second. The environments are great, and much more diverse than the 1st game. Even on the normal difficulty this game is a challenge, but not frustrating. When you die it's because you messed up not because of a cheap death. You really have to bring in the right weapons for the job. Each fight is really has a sense of tension. When it's over I'm always thinking "phew that was close" which is exactly what a survival horror game should do.

Crysis 2 gets an honorable mention, but loses points for not delivering DX11 out of the box.

As for disappointments I would have to pick NFS Shift 2 Unleashed. While it had really good core components the initial release was riddled with bugs and control issues. The 1st patch has resolved some issues, but not enough to get me back into the game. The worst disappointment is the terrible collision detection, and lack of damage in multiplayer.

I think that we may mention Bulletstorm as well, that game was kickass

Red Faction: Armageddon and Crysis 2 are the two games released so far that I really enjoy playing. I'm pretty sure BF3 will top them, but I've still got a few months to wait. I'm also eagerly awaiting Serious Sam 3:BFE.

i thought Duke Nukem Forever and Bulletstorm were about the same
- 7/10

i didn't get to play a lot of games this year; Metro 2033 in January - it's old but a good game.

i started Shogun then realized it was a really long haul... It is a good looking game. Civ V, i can't get into.

DiRT 3 is a good racing game and i think it is better than DiRT 2; it works good in 5x1 Eyefinity. Great visuals.

Alice Madness Returns started great then deteriorated into a damn puzzle and (worst of all) Jumping game with imprecise controls. Couple that with lack of anytime save and i won't be finishing it anytime soon. Great atmosphere, art and level design coupled with a hack and slash platformer. 6/10 for me. i'll just review the performance and the PhysX (spectacular) and 3D Vision (poor for jumping) aspects of it.

It looks like for me it comes down to reviewing HW or games

Crysis 2 is next for me; i was waiting for the bug fixes and the DX11 patch before loading it up. i also got Dungeon Siege III but i think i will go for the performance and S3D review instead of a game review.

Witcher 2. Renewed my faith in PC games. Finally a non FPS game to play and actually enjoy. Definitely in my top 3 of all time favorite RPG's and I've been playing them all since the DOS days.

Only 2011 game I bought was GT5 for the PS3. The rest were all older games.

It was Portal 2, but inFAMOUS 2 just took the top spot. Maybe UC3 might have a shot, but doubtful.

My thoughts as well.

I am getting quite frustrated with PC games. Either that or I am just getting old. Looking back, I have not completed a single PC game for at least 2 years. None of them (portal 2, witcher 2, shogun 2, crysis 2, Metro, etc.) have been able to hold my interest for more than a couple of hours.

It is kind of depressing. After 28 years of PC gaming, I might finally be done with it.

Hard to say. I'm not done with it yet but probably Infamous 2 thus far. It's perfectly balanced and keeps me going without getting too boring. Just when I think it's getting a little stale, I get another major power and it's fun again.

Portal 2 was good, but a little simple.

The Witcher 2 has been good so far, but I haven't put enough time into it. It's good but I need to be in the right mood... plus Infamous got in the way.

Crysis 2 was good enough to finish, but that's about it. For comparison I didn't finish the first one.

:hmm: It seems every game I've played that came out this year has been a "2". Odd, and a little disappointing.

edit: Forgot I also played LA Noire. But I sold it for Infamous 2 before I finished it. I was nearly done, and it was just too boring at that point. That's probably my biggest disappointment yet thus far in the year.
