FF4- nothing was anywhere close to it for YEARS. So much depth and innovation, and still the best magic system ever. Magicians could use magic all the time and not run out of points! You didn't have to melee for 1 damage for an hour so you could have MP for the boss! Hidden treasure and monsters! Elemental damage, usable items, great balance of levelling and advancing the story. I have not liked any FF after the SNES era except Tactics, which I finally got sick of after 66 hours of the same old same old.
Battlefield 2- I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned this. BF2 combines fast-twitch with intelligent strategy. I'm very uncoordinated but I can still learn to kick ass in a challenging action game. I use a keyboard to fly but I can still almost always outpilot the enemy because I use my head. The lamers are usually a small price to pay for the stupendous ownage this game has over any two other FPS.
Everquest- I played a warrior for 4 years. EQ is way too much of a timesink and I won't go back, but I loved meeting so many new people and finding new ways to overcome challenges most people wouldn't touch. When you work hard on your gear and skill, it's often fun to get a PUG just so you can get some validation. And AAs.
Tecmo Super Bowl II / III- I've never gotten into Madden...don't really know why. I've played this game many seasons and still play it sometimes. It's just fun.
Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries - Similar reasons to BF2. I'm a details man, so I like tweaking my 'mechs to the gram and making the peoples fall down.
Majesty- One of the most underappreciated games ever. So many reasons.
Dark Wizard - "Archer attacks for 1 damage."
"Bart counterattacks Archer for 255 damage."
"Archer died."
X-Men Vs. Street Fighter - The last good fighter before they went crazygonuts. Juggernaut + Wolverine. "I'M...UNSTOPPABLE!!"
In the end, FF4 comes out on top, with BF2 and Majesty close behind. I don't think I'll ever play a RPG that will unseat FF4 for me- they're just made so differently now, and I'm not impressed. :disgust:
