I like fiction but have to admit I enjoy nonfiction. I am currently reading Peter the Great by Robert Massie. Never realized how incredible he was. The story of the German family, the Arms of Krupps by Manchester. 100 Years of Solitude by Garcia is also incredible reading.
And if you can get the Chinese sagas by Louis Cha, The Legendary Couple, Dragon and others, it is the best. My only regret is not being able to read Chinese. This literature is overlooked by Americans but hopefully will be discovered and become appreciated by many Westerners. I think that after reading so much Western European literature, Louis Cha is fresh and honest writing. It does not dwell on bad guy/gal, good guy/gal but looks honestly at people in general and says we all have bad and good therefore, yin-yang is indeed more of a sensible explanation than the dualistic thinking that pervades Western lit. IMHO
