Norwegian Elkhound

The first dog the family had was an Elkhound. He was a great dog, very intelligent, good with us kids, and was always looking out for us. My folks was building a house at one point in a cul-de-sac and Max would follow us around as we played around the area whenever we visited the site. My mom used to say that she would feel sorry for the stupid son of a bitch that would try to pull anything on us with Max around. Only thing that as kids we did not like was that he was not very playful, for that I love labs. He also needed a lot of exercise to stay fit, he wasn't one to be active on his own. So he had some weight problems in his later years since he wasn't getting enough walking in.

Yeah great dogs - we had a bunch of Elkhounds when I was growing up. They do require a lot attention with excercise, and grooming - a lot of brushing.

This is the breed I really, really want. But unfortunately not enough space at home

I've always been partial to goldens and boxers.

If I had a house, I'd love to get a doberman or a rottie. I love the markings and skill of those dogs. For now though, in the apartment I have Gretel. Never would've pictured me a Dachshund guy, but she is just the greatest dog.

Both dogs my family has owned have been mutts, but it also happens to be that some of the possible breeds that have been part of the mix are my favorite.

But, I love:

Labs, German Shepherds, Huskies, Boxers, Australian Shepherds

The first dog my family had, was a true mutt of mutts. Still no true idea what was in her, but she lived to 17, and only because we put her down. Her heart seemed strong and she still had energy bursts, but her kidneys were failing, and likely a lot of her body was too. She was getting really thin (although she was pretty thin her whole life), and her hips were starting to cause her problems unless she was in an energy kick. Was so hard to accept that it was time to let her go, for her own good - she was generally slow at that point and just wasn't herself, especially her last year. Heart didn't want to stop though and never showed signs of heart trouble.
Probably had some terrier, standard poodle (the big kind - those are so cool), but who knows what else.

Current dog: Known to have Lab, a hint of Rottweiler (doesn't show, her mom had a little, and the previous generation dad was probably even mix lab/rott), and most likely a great deal of Aussie Shepherd. She seems like an even mix Lab and Aussie. Boy is she fun. Has a Lab coat, but is kind of small, roughly 40lbs and about the size of an Aussie iirc. Has the face of an Aussie with some Lab. Has an even mix of personality too. Quite a lab, but the energy, spirit, and antics of an Aussie. Has different bonds with different people, very loyal, defender of the yard and any random movement, sometimes I swear even just a shadow outside, gets her all worked up. Takes awhile to warm up to strangers but never is threatening when we're home, at least she's probably never felt threatened by anyone that's come in, just not fond until she has time to warm up to them. After that, it's play, jump, lick, and maybe hump. She's a humper. And she was fixed. She very much wants to be the Alpha Female.

Me too. I have pure shepherd as do my parents and both have bad hips. I call this guy a shep husky mix but its hard to say for sure. My other dog is a 100% pure mutt and is the best dog I've ever had.

Mutt. Pure mutt. My rottie-sheperd-lab cross is one of the best looking dogs I've ever seen. No pictures handy of him though.

Neapolitan Mastiff. seroiusly...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neapolitan_Mastiff

"can easily reach up to 200 pounds"
"As a guardian breed, they are very wary of strangers, but usually if seeing that their master is relaxed, will soon accept them."
"The Neapolitan Mastiff rarely barks unless under provocation, renowned for sneaking up on intruders as opposed to first alerting them of their presence."
"It was frequently used in the Roman arenas pitted against lions, bears, and gladiators for entertainment."

And Mastiffs in general:

"As dogs of war, they fought alongside the Roman legions, and in this way they were spread throughout Europe."

That and Corgis - Because Ein was awesome on Cowboy Bebop

Rhodesian Ridgebacks -- ours is a mix with Belgian Malinois. Great temperment, quite smart, but stubborn as hell.

I'd say labs, because that's what I had when I was a kid.

I've also always liked Saint Bernards ....
