Bichon, coz that's what we have

lol, for a moment I thought you were saying, "Bitch-on" like bitch-en or somethin'. But then I looked it up and OMG cute. I hate it when dogs are yappers though.

Bichon is no yapper, but when he barks it sounds like a big dog.

I generally like the larger breeds with either a sporting or working backgrounds. My favorites are labs, goldens, German Shepherds, the various sled dogs, setters, etc.

By far the smartest dog I ever owned (or that ever owned me) was a beagle-terrier-whatever mix that we rescued from the local pound. When she was a puppy she had the typical puppy desire to chew. She grabbed anything, shoes, books, clothing, whatever she could reach. To coax her into returning it we'd offer her a treat. She quickly outgrew the chewing, but never forgot that lesson. For the rest of her life if she wanted a treat she'd steal something. She wouldn't chew it, she'd just bring it to whoever was nearby. She'd sit there with the stolen booty in her mouth and wait to be noticed. If you ignored her she'd woof a little. If that failed she'd nudge your hand or foot. If that failed she'd shake her head and fling the shoe right at you. It was impossible to ignore her and she refused to take no for an answer. Whenever she demanded a treat she got one. It was adorable. Later in life she developed diabetes, got cataracts and eventually went blind. That didn't slow her down at all. She memorized the layout of the house and would never bump into anything. She could even play her favorite game, fetch, totally blind. You could throw her tennis ball and she'd be able to retrieve it by sound and smell alone. What a great dog she was.

Great story and thanks for sharing.

I'll be the first in this thread to declare my love for #9, and specifically toy poodles. I'm not a fan of standard sized poodles, but I totally love my toy.

We had to give our beagle up to a family member because he got aggressive with our cats.

Anyway, in the time we had him he was lovable and happy as hell. Excellent temperament and a children magnet. Training, OTOH, was more difficult than other dog breeds I've worked with.

I love German Shepherds for training, but their temperament isn't as consistent from dog to dog as other breeds. I'd say that overall, labs and goldens + mixes are the best of both worlds.

Still, if I were to get a dog today, it'd be a GSD.

We have an Aussie/lab mix who I think is probably the best of both breeds. She's really intelligent, not aggressive, barks about once a week (or less), can catch frisbees in the air, loves to swim, doesn't overeat.... beautiful merle coat... She's about 60lbs and 2 years old next Monday

As for the smell that someone mentionned, she does smell whenever she comes in from running around outside, but it only lasts 5-10 minutes... we bathe her every 1-2 weeks in the summer because she swims a lot and about once a month in the winter...

Golden was one of my favorites; our lab/boxer mix is the smartest dog I've ever known. We can't even spell "w a l k" or "p i z z a" any more in front of him. Great dog.

I also like our Great Pyrenees, she's very loyal, but still in puppy stage (although if there were a "who has the biggest dog" contest here, I might win with her.) What's nicest about her are her looks, plus her intimidating size.

No love for boxers? http://www.canadasguidetodogs....s/boxerphoto/boxer.jpg

Not my dog obviously. I don't have any pictures of my old boxer who died.

Anyway, I like English Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Golden Retrievers, and so many other kinds. I love dogs. Dogs are much better than cats

Hmm, 12hrs before you someone did say Boxer. Wonder who?

Blah, one person. I didn't notice your post because it was a one liner... I think I started skimming for just pictures.

Siberian Husky, but it has to be meaty with a full coat of fur. I've seen some that appear anorexic with short fur, not what I like.

Otherwise, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds.

We're on our 6th Great Dane and the only thing I don't completely love about them is their short lifespan. Our current girl is starting to get up there now at 6 years old.

(AKA none)

Barking can be annoying in excess true but a moderate amount due to excitement and or playfulness is fine. And as far as licking your face I loved it when my dog did that.

My folks was building a house at one point in a cul-de-sac and Max would follow us around as we played around the area whenever we visited the site. My mom used to say that she would feel sorry for the stupid son of a bitch that would try to pull anything on us with Max around. Only thing that as kids we did not like was that he was not very playful, for that I love labs. He also needed a lot of exercise to stay fit, he wasn't one to be active on his own. So he had some weight problems in his later years since he wasn't getting enough walking in.

Jack Russell Terror without a doubt. Extremely intelligent, high energy, very loyal. I have two and love them still even though they ripped up the carpet to the boards in their room.

I most definitely do not have a favorite breed. The one dog I had (as a 12 year old) was an Alsatian Shepard. I really loved that dog. It was done in by its bad habit of chasing cars.
