I think you should be able to marry cousins or siblings... just not have children with them.

I see a gay marriage or beastuality link here....
Sure, gay marriage sounds fine too. With beastiality though, the beasts aren't consenting adults, so...

If the people who are for gay marriage, which seem to include most of AT, including me..are all for two consenting adults doing whatever they want, what's wrong with 1st cousin marriages? It doesn't affect you or anyone else in any way whatsoever. As the sort of motto for gay marriages goes, "If you're against it, don't get one".

It's also a myth that birth defects are increased dramatically for children of cousins than a non-related pair..it's higher, but still insignificant.

And as the OP states, it's common in other societies, who are you to judge the cultural differences of others?

It's actually fairly common in certain societies, middle eastern, indian and asian comes to mind.

The risks of birth defects are not significantly higher in cousin marriages (as compared to siblings), and its more a matter of social conditioning than anything else.

I think long ago, when villages were only the size of 100 people, it was inevitable that marriages would be formed between relatives.

Heck, a certain religion I know claims that a bunch of people went on to colonise the earth. I'm not sure what that makes them.

The popular saying around here is "3rd cousins aren't blood". Anyone care to expound on that? In any case, I don't really go to family reunions to pick up chicks.

Are there actually any (US) laws against cousins marrying? Or is it just one of those things everyone assumes?

I wouldn't, but if two people can handle the stigma, I'm not going to cry foul without a good reason to.

That's why we're all retarded.

Chance of having amplified hereditary defect is higher between paternal cousins than that between maternal ones, so I read or heard.

SUBTITLE C. DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE
CHAPTER 6. SUIT FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE
SUBCHAPTER C. DECLARING A MARRIAGE VOID

GO TO TEXAS CODE ARCHIVE DIRECTORY

Tex. Fam. Code § 6.201 (2005)

§ 6.201. Consanguinity

A marriage is void if one party to the marriage is related to the other as:

(1) an ancestor or descendant, by blood or adoption;

(2) a brother or sister, of the whole or half blood or by adoption;

(3) a parent's brother or sister, of the whole or half blood or by
adoption; or

(4) a son or daughter of a brother or sister, of the whole or half

Doesn't this cover it?

(1) an ancestor or descendant, by blood or adoption;

nope, cousins are sideways on the family tree, not up or down. ancestor would be parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. descendant is children, grandchildren, etc.

What are your opinions?

My friend who's from there explained that to me actually. They have (traditionally) really big families so poeple don't tend to be as close to their first cousins as here. He said he had something like 47 first cousins and more second cousins than he could count (he said he did not know wtf a second counsin is until several years after he came to Canada).

Contrast that to me - no first cousins and 4 second cousins.

Personally, I think 3rd cousins and above is fine. When you get to such great divisions, its hard to call yourselves "family"
