What isn't working in Windows 8?

I just got my TechNet copy of Windows 8 yesterday and have it on a couple of Virtual Machines and one laptop.

Do far, I don't hate the UI as much as I thought I would though that's faint praise. Mostly the UI formerly known as metro gets in my way and adds a couple of mouse clicks to a lot of things I do - but I guess I can live with it. I am quite impressed with how fast it is though running on a 6 year old laptop with 2.0 Ghz core 2 Duo and 3 GB RAM.

Mostly I'm currently testing to see what applications we need at work that will not work. Unfortunately I've already got two that are deal breakers if I can't get them to work.Lets start a list of what doesn't work for business users. Here are the first two items:

1. Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 (the corporate version of Symantec antivirus)
2. Cisco VPN client. From the entries in the logs I'm seeing messages that say that the VPN client it not compatible and I need to use Cisco Anyconnect - which of course means changes to our firewall that I will have to fight our network admin/security guy over.

The only thing I've run into so far is that the OpenAL plugin for Winamp doesn't work, which is extremely strange since it's such a simple thing. Thankfully it's open source, and a fresh recompile solved that issue.

As for your enterprise products, I'm not surprised. Those integrate themselves at such a low level that they basically have to be incompatible with new OSes for their own good.:|

With the Symantec products it's not unusual and we had the same problem when Windows 7 came out. It took Symantec a while to get out a compatible version.

On the other hand this is the first time we have ever had a problem with the VPN client. It will actually install and run but when you actually try to establish a connection, it throws an error on attempting to enable the VPN virtual nic. The error makes it sound like a permissions issue but being logged in as an admin and doing a "run as administrator" doesn't help.

I've had league of legends fail several times in full screen mode. I was able to log out of windows 8 and log back on to fix it, and reconnect to the game, but it was a major annoyance. It seems like playing in maximized windowed mode fixes the issue.

only thing that will not work for me is a benchmark i like which is very minor, other than that everything works fine under windows 8

Arcsoft Total Media Theater 3 is incompatible. It is an older version of their player, but isn't entirely obsolete.

I dont see any reason to use windows 8, when windows 7 works so well. Many companies do things differently. Often it is better for the vendors to field test the OS and then wait and see if they certify their servers or applications to run on Windows 8.

There is no reason to rush to judgement or to start using a brand new operating system. I am using vista now and it is getting almost as good as windows 7 with all the updates. However, my company did not even use windows vista.

I only found one program that didn't work correctly on Windows 8, and that's only because the program wasn't updated for it. Other than that, everything seems to work fine right now. ASUS even had all the updated drivers for Windows 8 on their website, ready to go.
