You'll definitely want to encode with LAME using --alt-preset extreme, then. It's a highly tuned VBR setting that usually resules in files anywhere from 256 to 320kbps, and it's been extensively tested as well. He shouldn't be able to tell a difference from the original if you use it. (Make sure to let him test an --alt-preset extreme mp3 out in a blind listen against the original wav so he can't have any bias against the format.) =P

He said he would like all the cd's ripped to his computer is the original wav format.
:Q

Then, just rip all the tracks to .wav files then put them on your favorite format DVD and set him up with two or three of these!

go 4 x maxtor 160gb drives.

attach an external cd-rw up to a USB or firewire port...u wouldn't even need a RAID controller card for the additional channels...it would also be nice to have your case exclusively for hdds, since four of them is quite a bit...u could leave breathing space between them without having to use a full tower.

external roms look cool too...in fact, u could probably drop that into a slim-line desktop (the 4 hdds) like the aopen H340D...i'm sure there's 4 bays...the casper/II is another option (both at directron)

All great ideas on an endless budget. I doubt that will be the case though. What is the solid state drives that boasts it can transfer so many files of the human genome per second?

Does Lame have its own format, or is it just an mp3 with great encoding quality? Does it play in any common media player?

why dont' u try another file format like mp3 pro or wma? they generally sound better at lower bit rates and higher compression ratios.

Lame is just a great mp3 encoder. IIRC, CDex uses Lame as its mp3 encoder. I personally use Exact Audio Copy and/or RazorLame when I archive music. To the other poster, the reasons for not using mp3pro and wma are many. They are both rather restricted formats, and while they sound better at low bitrates, they are rather cruddy at higher bitrates. I use WMA at low bitrates myself, but if you're archiving, mp3 or OGG is the best way to go, at least for now.

Those codecs suck ass; don't bother with them

If your guy wants the original format, use a lossless compression like MONKEY'S AUDIO www.monkeysaudio.com

I will need to do some bitrate/encoding comparisons and let him listen to them to see if he still wants to procede with the project. It appears that 256k is now the minimum bitrate, but will probably be upped to 320.
I really doubt that he could tell the difference between --alt-preset extreme and the orignal audio data

I would wait until harddrives sizes increased to 400-500gb before doing this project. Then buy 2 harddrives for the main computer and another 2 for a backup. But seriously, this project is nuts and is probably going to be the death of your professor.

Why don't you just start the ripping onto hard drive and not worry about how to store it. Then by the time it's finished, terabyte drives will be in the bargain bin at computer shows.

he has a good idea!! if you give him a comp with one 160gb hd and let him fill that up then throw on another hd that happens to be the biggest around then maybe 200-300?
and keep doing that each time he fills one up the next one will happen to be bigger and bigger so you may only use 3-5 hard drives compared to the 7! the last hard drive could actually possibly be used as back up as it will most likely be as big as the others combined!

Well I have to admit that I was pretty interested in this project .. I have around 2500 CD's and from time to time I've toyed with doing something along these lines. Where however my project might only be 1/4 of the size of his(maybe even less) I think this is the wrong time to do it. Even if I had huge amounts of $$ to throw at it it just seems like now wouldn't be the right time- technology wise.

The current HD solutions aren't large enough yet(esp to encode all of that stuff w/ a backup in a semi-lossless format).. I think one day this would be a good idea but for now just use a fraction of the money to build some better shelves, or maybe a small addition onto the house just for storing music.

the new Abit AT7 motherboard has 6 IDE ports, including 4 on a RAID controller. you could put 12 drives in there. just my thoughts. 12 drives * 160 GB/drive = almost 2 TB of storage. hello, 256kb encoding!!!
