When raised properly pits are absolutely the best and don't let anyone tell you differently. You won't find a more loving, loyal, and intelligent dog. Unfortunately, stupid dog owners that don't know what they're doing give pits a bad rep.

You are exactly right. Not too long ago, on a episode of "Judge Judy" they were discussing a "Pit" on there in the case. Judge Judy kept saying....It is a Pit Bull. They ARE dangerous. The owner of the dog lost the case too. Stupid judge....

I've never had a pit and I agree with this. Pits are some of the friendliest dogs going. To make fighting pits, people have to torture and twist their personalities. My late Shepard/husky (who I loved) was a natural butthead compared to most pits I've met.

This, and it is a pit. Possibly 100%. Pits are very muscular dogs.

A friend of mine had a pure pit that was the sweetest, most gentle dog. You'd think it was a golden retriever, but with a brain. When you fed her a baby carrot, she would barely nibble it from your hands with her front teeth, so she didn't bite you. If there was an infant on the ground, she would nuzzle her and lay with her on the ground. Best. Dog. Ever.

She developed cancer and was put down.

Many people haven't thought about it or understand, but pits are bred to not be aggressive to humans. They were bred to hate other dogs and animals in general. It had to be that way because a pit in the ring that would turn on its handler was put down quickly. Even a pit that was in a totally aggressive mood from a fight had to be able to come down quickly among humans. For those that do bite humans it almost always because the dogs have been mistreated or trained improperly.

Don't get me wrong. Pits are dangerous dogs because of their capacity to do so much damage. Personally I think that anyone who owns a pit should have to have a license to do so. For those willing to treat and train one properly though you won't find a better dog. I've raised various terriers, labs, and shepards and pits are my favorite by a long shot. In general they are so much more intelligent than nearly any other breed it's not even a contest. And, yes, I once had a border collie, and she was extremely smart too, but they have their own issues and can tend to be a bit snippy towards strangers and children which is why I prefer pits.

As a pitbull owner, I have to agree with everyone else who posted in this thread.

They are the smartest, loyal, and loving dog I've ever own of all the breed. My pit would never dare touch a family member no matter how rough we play or how we accidentally step on her tail.

As with most pitbulls, they have a natural instinct to hunt other animals and do not get along with other dogs. They also have a natural instinct to protect the owner & family members to the death, now that's loyalty. She was a beautiful dog and does a damn good job at guarding the house & my girlfriend.

The funny thing is we never taught or train her. She is extremely protective of me and my girl but if only you know what we know, she is a whiny baby at heart.

A big fat muscular baby that could do some damage if she see you threaten us. She love kids BTW.

Who could say no to this face?

Looks like an American Bulldog, possibly an American Bulldog mix to me.

Here's mine for reference:

What does your dog weigh? That would help. American Bulldog's are larger than pitbulls.
Your dog also has an under bite, like most American Bulldogs. Going through your images once more, I'm pretty positive it's an American Bulldog, probably a hybrid or a Scott type and not a pit.

I agree with what's been posted already. He is definitely pit/Staffordshire, probably fully or very close to it. My dog is half pit, half Lab and would NEVER hurt a human (though she's gotten into a few dog fights). In obedience school, one lady had a pit looking a LOT like yours that she'd adopted (just showed up to her farm and stayed), and that was the smartest, sweetest, gentlest dog I've ever seen. My dog would get in his face from time to time and he just ignored it, even though he could have torn my dog to shreds.

Definitely a terrier mix.

At the risk of starting yet another "Pits are/aren't evil" debate I can point to two extremes. My cousin has two Pits that are trained and well-behaved and have never had any aggression issues. I can also show you some pictures of what a "well-behaved" Pit did to a client. This was a family dog that was around children but one day the dog-owner's child was unable to put the dog in it's crate, it ran out the front door, chased another small girl down the street, and mauled her.

We have a 8 y.o. Lab that we brought home just before we had our 1st kid. He has put up with grabby toddlers and has been exceptionally tolerant and patient. We have no qualms about leaving the dog alone with our kids but there is no way I would do that at my cousin's house.

Great looking dog!

There was a time in this country when pitbulls were THE family dog to have. It's a shame what their image has become now.

Definitely looks like pitbull...although it MIGHT be one of the other "pitbull-like" breeds.

I've never owned one, but have known other folks who have. MOST have been excellent family dogs, loving, peaceful although very protective, and as loyal as any dog can be...however, many of the attacks blamed on pitbulls are also from "quiet family dogs" that have never bitten anyone before...they are not all by "dogs raised to be mean" by drug dealers and such. You just never know what might set one off.

I'm definitely in the "pitbulls should be killed on sight" camp.

I'm telling you he's an American Bulldog, and not a pitbull terrier.

He could be my dogs younger brother, and my dog is a "purebred" with a pedigree verifiable into the 1960s.

He's probably 80-90lbs at one year, and while his weight is likely within 5-10lbs of adult, he'll still fill out over the next year+.

My boy is 2, between 95-100lbs depending on if he has shit before getting on the scale.

Yea,,,, until they freak out and rip your kids head off.

The majority of pitbull attacks are the first time the dog had ever shown aggression.

Pitbulls are also listed as some of the most likely dogs to attack people.

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html

According to the Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings.

~~~~~
As for the dog in the pics, it looks like a pitbull.
Personally, I would take the dog to the local vet, and make sure it is a pitbull. It is is in fact a pitbull, have it put down before it kills one of your kids.
