What kind of engineer designs LCDs, hdtvs, projectors, etc.?

Just wondering. I know not one type of engineer makes anything these days, but what are a few types of engineers that actually design the displays and stuff?

No one engineer will do what you say. It takes teams of engineers to do so. For instance, an engineer may work on the decode circuit, another on the DSP programming, another on the power supply, another on the layout etc. etc.

depends on what kind of things.

industrial designers design products while engineers do the rest.

there is such a thing as "industrial engineer" although i'm not sure what exactly they do.

you also have mechanical/electricals in there. mechies would design the physical parts while electricals would obviously do the electronics.

i'm an industrial design major and i design products.

As an EE, I have to take Mat Sci I & II next year. I heard both classes are terrible.
I don't see how that relates to LCD and projectors though. Materials and Sciences is mostly tensil strength, metal conductivity, etc.

Electrical for circuit design
Computer for firmware and maybe some circuit design
Mechanical for the enclosure and other fit issues
Manufacturing for the assembly line process

Not sure on the design of the actual panel. Probably some combination of Optical (if there is such a thing), Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, and maybe a physics guy.

Phillips recently exited the LCD business because they couldn't drive even decent margins in that field.

You don't want to be working in a field that has become a commoditized, price-at-all-cost market. It's just not a good field to be in.

It's just not going to be very financially rewarding. If you're at a point where you can make this kind of career decision, you should pick something that isn't going to limit your options in the future. This kind of product design work does.

Yup and each one of those engineers could have any kind of background/study (ie electrical, mechanical, chemical, etc).

Industrial engineering (which != industrial design) has little if anything to do with actually designing products. It's a "make the business process work better" type of discipline.

Optical engineering does exist. If you are interesting in studying that, Rose-Hulman has a great optical engineering program.

It would involve taking loads of physics and math, and some chemistry and engineering design classes.
