The official website says:

Restricted items include meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, soil, and products made from animal or plant materials.

uhhhh.... Anything made from plants or animals.... That's EVERYTHING. WTF?

Only thing I've ever had a problem bringing back was blood pudding. The rest should be fairly obvious (like fruits and vegetables).

CA is the most anal about this. Nobody should care about processed and canned foods. They're talking about raw fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. That's why the pigs blood freaked them out and was forbidden. Clearly anything that can bring back a bug is a no-no so don't bring back that jar of dirt from a 3rd world country.

Customs confiscated vacuum-sealed prosciutto that we tried to bring back. Fruits and veggies and meats are a big no-no. They let us bring in cheese though.

if you are going to bring back any food items- make sure you have no raw foods with you as they will force you to throw them away, plants and animals are forbidden too

Sooooo no food at all is allowed into the US. No canned goods, candy, biscuits, baked goods, beef jerky, died fruit...

what's wrong with candy, canned goods, baked goods? my relatives bring loads of the stuff back from the philippines.

That's what I'm saying. The original "products made from animal or plant materials" restriction given in the OP from this link

cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/arriving_travelers.xml

Is retarded at best.

I just read the acceptable list on that linked search, and sour cream was listed as acceptable... who brings home sour cream on an international flight?

You're allowed 1 carton of cigs and 1 bottle of booze duty free through customs.
You are not allowed to bring any Cuban cigars.

Brought back baked goods like cookies and dried/preserved fruits.

I remember people used to bring back jerky and dried fish.

I had no trouble bringing back some pistachios and nougat from the UK (was a gift from family there, though I believe they were originally from another country).

None is usually a good rule. However, often Booze is allowed.

(This is a joke - Dont do this!)
When you get to Customs ask them if that includes Cocaine and Napalm?

(Dont really say this!) At minimum you will be taken to a private room for a special search!

You are better off not trying to bring back food items, unless your are wishing to donate them to the guards. We have enough plants and bugs and animals we can not get rid of?????

If you have to explain you're telling a joke then you simply shouldn't be telling jokes.
