what kind of food would you bring on a flight?

I'm flying from NYC to LA next week... trip is mostly all set, but I'm debating what kind of foods to bring with me to survive the flight.

I'm trying to think of a couple things that are filling, don't involve a significant mess (crumbs), will hold up to being tossed around in my carry-on (messenger bag), and don't have any particularly strong smells (which rules out my usual traveling food, jerky)

I like to bring nuts and dried fruit like cranberries or raisins. And dark chocolate.

I flew out to LA last week. I went to Trader Joes and bought a bag of trail mix.

Smells won't be too much of an issue after a few hours. Sense of smell is extremely compromised in an airplane, which is also why food in airplanes tastes weird.

Why not the airplane staple, peanuts?

sandwich in zip log bag.. they do get soggy if you throw in lettuce and tomato.. those slim jim jerky are awful but will last the toss around. bring some of those carnegie deli pastrami sandwich, some shake shack burgers

for about 10 seconds, I thought about a tuna sandwich.

braised chicken feet. I'll gnaw on them after midnight without the overhead light on. If someone look at me funny I would say "children's fingers are best braised in soy sauce. Want some?

Not going to offend people from IL with a guns and ammo. Only the city of Chicago has a ban on guns. Otherwise we're a pretty "gun friendly" state with a huge hunting population.

That is a pungent mix... I will be looking for you on the plane, love cuttlefish...

Anyhow, the OP, I bring just about anything that tastes the same regardless of it's temperature, and nothing "wet". So a sandwich is out, but trail mix or jerky, or cuttlefish is in.

Chili and a nice pork sausage. If the airline is going to make the passengers suffer with poor legroom, uncomfortable seats, etc., the least you can do is give them something else to think about.
