What are type of laptop are you looking for? If your looking at a desktop replacement wait for one of those crazy Toshiba deals that come out to $699 after reabtes. If you want something portable try to pick up a used X or T series Thinkpad. I own a X31 and I love it to death.

Excellent course of action.

The Toshiba deals are typically offered on a somewhat regular basis for varying amounts. Should be a new inexpensive notebook deal posted tomorrow in the ATHD forum.

well its not for me. its for my cousin. but mainly for school. internet, word, some gaming thats not very graphic intense.

hopefully something comparable to his desktop would be nice, as it would be replacing his desktop.

athlon XP 1600+ (might be 1800+)
radeon 8500LE

Um, no, you won't find comparable laptop performance for 700 bones. Laptop performance is generally pretty dismal at that price point, especially when someone is used to desktop performance. Even expensive laptops seem slow, at least to me. There's a tradeoff for that portability.

For most of the tasks listed above (web browsing, email, office productivity, etc), even lower end notebooks perform quite well. The trade-off your cousin may have to accept if purchasing a notebook at that price point would be the graphic capability.

Few suggestions:
  • Typically at least one budget machine on sale each week from the various retailers. This week's choices are a Compaq Presario RS2103US for $799.99 AR at OfficeMax, and a Toshiba Satellite A55-S3062 at CompUSA. Not a particularly stellar week, but as you may imagine the offerings are very cyclical, and unfortunately your cousin just missed the before-school sales.
  • View Dell Outlet Offerings. Dell often runs special "$XXX off refurbished" promotions at the Outlet, and one can find machines in the $700 range. The above description regarding graphic capability will undoubtedly still apply, however.
  • Definitely consider used models. Frequent the FS/FT forum and other similar forums if you can - you may find something a bit more in his price range, with more performance than if purchased new.
  • Consider a SFF machine. A budget SFF could later be upgraded (and could make use of a number of parts from his present machine), and may prove a most agreeable alternative.
Good luck.

Sunday office Depot will have a $599 AR CTO Compaq R3000Z. I played with the R3000 at frys, it had the best keyboard of the 20 or so laptops I test drove that day.

Read about it on the 7 page OD page on fatwallet. I would refference the ATECH thread but I could not find it.

Specs are pretty good but not stellar graphics. Spend $30 to upgrade the graphics to 64mb, not for the speed but for the firewire and 5 in one reader.
