odd question, but its a real concern....

How much funking on a foam mattress? Springs kind of add to the fun dont they?

It's better IMO

We have a $500 one from Costco (forgot the name)

As far as comfort, we like our Foam bed a lot, but it was a little firm (we knew that going into it). We just got a mattress topper (memory foam as well) and now it's perfect.

We love it

I have a king and queen from these guys, both are "ORTHOPEDIC PREMIER SUPER PILLOW TOP" models.

The king is about a year old, the queen is about 10 years old and is like new. I purchased both brand new of course.

Easiest mattress purchase; no sales people is nice - just a cashier basically. I won't buy anywhere else now.

You DO NOT need to spend several thousand (or more) dollars for a high quality mattress.

It's simple really. Foam feels warm because its a great insulator. Touch a peice of metal right now. It will feel cold. That is because it conducts heat very well. The gel probably just conducts heat better than foam.

Where is it conducting it to? I'm lying on this bitch for 7 or 8 hours, does it end up in a wormhole somewhere? Thanks for the physics lesson though.

It distributes through the gel, which is a large surface area.

The issue he's describing is when the heat will get trapped in the foam since there is not a lot of air circulation. I've never run into this issue personally...my mattress pad has been plenty sufficient for me, even through summer.

If you're like me and you like to read a very large amount into pricier, longer lasting products, I found this useful when I wanted to read up on beds:
http://www.themattressunderground.com/

Read the articles or go on the forums and read any topic with a reply from Phoenix. That user knows everything about mattresses.

If you want to know what I ended up with:
http://www.rockymountainmattress.com/component-beds/the-coolcomfort-10/

Customizable memory foam.
After spending 5 mins looking at that website I got a huge sense of fear. Ill never be able to read all that

It would conduct it away from your body to the surface you are sleeping on.

Increasing airflow is another method of improving comfort from heat as it allows your sweat to evaporate using the body's own cooling system provided the air temperature is sufficiently low in humidity and temperature.

Great site for information. I definitely know more about mattresses than I ever dreamed possible.

whatever you do just don't buy a cheap matress. spend the extra money to get a good quality one that will last. you spend 1/4 - 1/3 of your life on your bed, might as well get some quality out of a mattress.

i got a w heavenly bed and have had it for like 4-5 years. it owns.

Agree, such a large portion of our lives are spent on something yet often it's given little thought or financial priority.
Personally, I really miss waterbeds, easy to keep warm or cool and very comfy.

Sears is running a decent mattress sale. A visit there might be worthwhile. I'm not a fan of haggling so the mattress specialty stores are out. I don't have a Costco near me, and if I did, I don't own a truck capable of carrying it home. Same goes for Sam's, with the addition that I outright dislike Sam's Club. I just bought a queen mattress/boxspring for ~1450 delivered. It was especially good for me because I bought it for delivery to our new house (out of state) after closing. And I was taxed at the delivery state's tax rate, which is a little lower than here.

The store from which you choose to buy isn't as important as the mattress you choose to buy. IMHO, the stores you visit give you different environments. If you're uncomfortable with salesmen, go for a no-haggle dept. store. If you need someone to talk you through it, check out a Sleepy's, etc. Comparing mattresses across stores is a nightmare. Don't even bother. Manufacturers rebrand and re-SKU identical mattresses under different brands and lines to the point where it's extremely difficult to compare. And if you are able to compare mattresses, the stores won't pricematch anyway (they are different SKUs, after all.

So my advice to you is to choose a store where you will feel comfortable "testing" your final 2-3 choices for 20+ minutes per mattress. I'm talking >5mins on your back, >5 on your left, >5 on your side, and maybe >5mins on your belly if you're a belly sleeper.

I bought mine from Denver Mattress Company, the Doctors Choice Eurotop model. I have a bad back, so I was determined to get a good one. It's over five years old and is still in good condition.

Of all the mattresses I've slept on, memory foam has been my favorite so far. I think I might try latex for my next one though.

bought a 3" 5lb density memory foam topper 2yrs ago.
havent noticed a diff.

do they have latex toppers?

Another vote for latex. Suck it up and spend the cash since you spend so much of your life on it.

I bought one directly from a factory in Dallas/Ft Worth. 10" of solid Talalay latex and couldn't be happier. Word of note, you can't use a box spring, need a solid foundation. Do eeet.

There are really only 4 kinds of foam for mattresses. (Poly, Visco, Gel and Latex) The one to avoid is visco. It will make you hot. You toss and turn all night. Gel sleeps 7 times cooler than visco and is more durable. It is a good product. Just be sure that it is at least 4 lb. density and not the 3.5 stuff. Latex sleep cooler than any. Go to small local mattress stores in your area and try them out. Skip the big stores.

Latex. The other foams move slowly. Latex is like innerspring but without the lumps or squeaks.

Thread marked. I'm in a similar spot, tho willing to spend upwards of a grand. What size are you looking for OP? I was thinking of a queen (although ideally I'd like a king) as it's also Me(260 lb)+SO(105 lb)+dog (30 lb). I"m really worried about wearing my side out far earlier than her side.

Just wait till you see how much mattresses end up costing. I thought a grand gave me quite a bit of wiggle room, but ended up spending closer to 1800. Ended up spending a little more and went for the King. Very happy with my choice overall.

iComfort by Serta as well. Damn comfortable. Bought it at a Mom and Pop furniture store but the price was dictated by Serta so it was the best "non-liquidator" price I was going to get.

What I need is a frame for a King at a good price and one that I can put on wood flooring. If anyone has a recommendation for one of those I would appreciate it.
