I'm considering getting an Iriver hard drive based mp3 player...and using the mic to record lectures. What do you people use?

Pencils, Pens, and Paper = $20

Hard-drive based MP3 player = Couple hundred $$$... and you'll still need to copy down what's on the board.

Stay awake and listen?

Why do I bother asking a question amongst a bunch of people who think they're better than life. Get over yourselves.

Personally, I keep a Chinese teenager lashed to my right arm at all times. Gotta make it through engineering somehow...

I'll ask the question again for anyone who's actually interested in answering it.

What recording device do you recommend? Thanks a lot if you're able to contribute to this.

For the flamers who are absolute geniuses...go do something more productive, like test how long you can hold your breath under lava.

I take notes, but I have considered getting a voice recording adapter for my iPod.

I've tried mspaint. My handwriting really is horrible. I can't rely on it as writing by hand is quite awkward for me.

edit: I said mspaint!! Lol. I meant ms word.

I am looking into a MP3 player that can record as well. The Creative Zen Micro is catching my eye. As for the people who say take your own notes, I've had several professors who's class is based entirely on there lecture and there is not a book or anything to really go off of besides your own notes. These professors usually do not have the most organized notes and a recorder comes in really handy.

Pers don't mind the genius' here at Anandtech. They're all super smart and ridicule the rest of the people who aren't as smart as they are. You know I am also looking for something to record lectures with. What I have in mind is an iPOD and a microphone attachment from some company, I think it's made by Belkin.

I have an iRiver IFT(?)-195, and I use that for listening music and recording lecture. A 50-minute lecture will only take up about 40~60 megabytes. If you sit in the front rows, the quality is quite excellent. A word of warning if you buy the old version: They do NOT automatically convert the recording to mp3 for you, the new version does though.

Edit: If you want to listen to the lecture I've recorded to see how you like it, let me know and I'll rip a part of it and send it to you.

Yea, I can get a university discount on the Ipod which makes the deal quite tempting. However, it doesn't seem as convenient as the Iriver which has the mic built in. The deal breaker would be the one with the better sound quality. In a lecture hall that seats 350, it's difficult to get a nice recording of the professor.

Yeah I keep hearing that the iPOD doesn't have that good sound recording quality. Even though you can use an external mic it still sounds kinda crappy from what I hear. Let me know if you go with the iriver and if it can record lectures really well, then I may pick it up myself.

I wasn't aware a counter opinion was viewed as unintelligent without even considering the opposing context.

I'll try not to trip over your ego on the way out

definitely... i'm on the verge of buying the iRiver IHP 140. The reviews on the net are a bit lacking in regards to recording quality. I guess i'll have to test it on my own.

Hey, I have the iRiver and have used it once to record some of my class. It seemed to work pretty well and I could hear everything that was being said (I was probably 30-40 feet from the prof). Sound quality was pretty decent too. Hope that helps your decision.

PS If you're trying to bootleg a concert, stand WAAAAAAAAY far from the speakers.

I have enough trouble staying awake through a lecture once, I don't want to have to listen to it twice.

The nice thing about using the computer to take notes is that your notes are searchable. You don't have to flip through pages to find a formula, just search for the title of it. Much faster than listening to hours of voice recordings over again.
