What kind of speeds do you get on your wireless lan

I get around 200 kbytes/sec between two wireless comps
However I get around 350-400 kbytes/sec between a wireless and a wired comp.

All connected to the same router - SpeedStream 2624

Is this the norm?

Thanks

Same router. I wobble around 3.5-4 Mbps, so peak at around 500KBPS. Using 64 Bit WEP. You might try upgrading the firmware on your AP. This all assuming your benchmarks are all equal. Meaning your wireless client to client association is the same strength to the AP, same obstructions and so forth.

I do not know how you derive your measures.

A countable way to do so is to transfer a 10MB file and compute the "speed" of transfer.

A decent to good Wireless connection should yield 500 ? 800 KB/sec. transfer. (B=Byte).

I got the rates by checking the speed on the ftp client while transferring huge files. I do have 128 bit WEP
maybe that's the cause of the low rate.

Your home/soho units do not handle WEP very well when it comes to throughput.
Allot of your business series AP's do, especially Cisco, they handle WEP better than any other Ap out there.
Once you turn it on, your speeds will drop, it is inevitable.

Re-read my initial post response. While the 2624 is affected by WEP, it won't affect it that much. What is your environment? Number of obstructions. signal strength and quality?

You'll never see anything close to 800 KBps on a SOHO AP. Even the enterprise AP's top out at around 750+ but you should be getting better than 1.6 Mbps, or 200 KBps, with our without WEP. THis all assuming your association from client to AP is strong, and devoid of any heavy inteference. You might try playing with the frequency base, Channel. Firmware as well, as I have mentioned.

Using a file size of 100Mb and having WEP128 enabled, I get about 6.1mbps avaerage throughput.
My Cisco 1200AP gets about 6.7mbps with WEP enabled. Mind you this was as stated before in this thread with a clear path from client to AP. Minimal obstructions.

Well, my laptop has a linksys card, and my desktop has a Speedstream USB adapter. Laptop
is about 8 feet away from the router. Router has the latest firmware. I'm hesitant to turn
off WEP, even though it's not that secure.

ktwebb, do you get your speeds from a transfer between *two* wirelessly networked comps

It seems that this is an important issue to you.

I am pretty sure that no one will beam you to the moon if you disable your WEP for 2 min. and try transferring a file.

No one is going to sniff your data and break your wep key in your house so dont panic. A TON fo data is needed, and frnakly to get that type of data from a home user they would have to sit outside your house for a day or two to gather packets..i would hope you would notice the guy in the van next to your place with an anntenae.

As Jack said, turn off WEP for a little bit and transfer a good size file (100mb or bigger) and see what you get for results.

Yep, but it is between an Orinoco silver card and a Cisco PCM350.

You didn't mention it was a linksys client initially. That is a very likely source of your problem. Although I've never actually used one, I haven't really heard much praise about Linksys client hardware. On the contrary, judging from BBS and Usenet posts I've read, they're notoriously weak.
Turn off WEP for a bit and do some ftp transfers. You have a better chance of hitting the lottery than losing data to wardrivers by shutting down WEP for 15 minutes.

I was only concerned about someone piggy backing off my dsl connection. I live
in an apt complex btw.

Anyways, I turned off WEP, and there was no difference in speed. Still get
around 200kBytes/sec.

I'll try moving my router around and see if it makes a diff.

200KB/sec is pretty slow I think. I get around 400KB/sec with 128-bit WEP enabled.

You will never get 11mbps out of normal SOHO 802.11b gear. Maybe 8, if you're lucky.

Maybe it was overlooked, but if you have two machines going wirelessly, then each will get 1/2 of the wireless bandwidth (8mbps) max. Which means each machine will get 4mbps max. Knock off 50% for WEP and another 15% for overhead, and you're left with startlingly little bandwidth.

WiFi machine -> wired machine, should be pretty fast -- ~800KBps / ~350KBps (without WEP/With WEP)

fyi, wireless runs at 11, 5, 2.5 and 1 mbs (or something very close)

Most of the times its at 2.5. All the time it is half duplex. It will always be slow.

Does WEP seriously cut the bandwidth in half?? I find that hard to believe....I could see *maybe* 20% MAX, but 50%???

Has anyone ran any tests on this?? I will try with my Belkin WAP/Orinoco card when I get home tonight.

My friend and I were getting 400kbps yesterday on the school wireless network with 64bit WEP, using a linksys client card. And they use Linksys AP's in their buildings.

It varies in some Wireless Cards the cut is insignificant, in some it can be 50% (the early Linksys Cards belong to the 50% group).
