Data published by the manufacturer isn't always correct and credible. You should, in most cases, ignore the technical figures and just listen to the setup and make up your mind upon that test alone; In the end, the way you like the sound that your system can put out is all that matters.

NAD amp
B & W speaker

Like the NAD amp but I'm think of getting a new one as it's missing some of the latest A/V connections.

mine blows too, but then again, i'm just a student

yamaha HTR-5650 receiver
polk R50 mains
polk R30 surrounds
polk R20 center/rear
aiwa 100 watt woofer (leftover from the old HTIB setup)
sony dvd (the one that half of them broke after 2 years)

i use banana plugs on 14 ga wire because messing with wires otherwise is a pain in the arse (moving sucks, don't make it worse)

Flac >HTPC > RME Hammerfall DSP > linn majik > linn lk 140 > Sonus Faber Grand pianos.

I'd love to do surround, but getting surround at the quality of my stereo setup would be waaay too much dinero...

couple of questions I just thought of:

For the people with a 7.1 setup, how does it sound with movies that don't make use of that surround technology? I think most movies are encoded for 5.1 How does music sound through a 7.1 surround setup?

What's a good way to choose a reciever? Are there any areas in particular I should check for? Which manafacturers are known to put out good recievers?

Here are the speakers I'm thinking of going with - Fluance - SX-HTB These are listed at a really good price direct from the company and I've heard very good reviews on the speakers. But since I'm going for a 7.1 setup I will need to buy an addtional 2 speakers as well as a subwoofer.

Are banana plugs worth having?

Check out JBL s310's and 312's on pricegrabber. The series 1 are really cheap now and AWESOME!!!!!!! They cut the line when series 2 came out and there the exact same thing

My friend has the same Sony RPTV as you.

One word of advice. Do not touch the flash focus button. It is literally a self-destruct button.

LOL

I hit it a few times when I first got the set, but it didn't really do anything. I had a service tech come out to address some red push that just turned out to be a result of my poor cable signal. He used the flash focus after messing with some of the convergence settings. I still have the TV. I haven't touched the flash focus button since.

My friend pushed it and his TV literally blew up. The tech came over and asked him straight out if he pushed the button. He knew exactly what was wrong and said Sony should just remove that button bc it causes alot of problems. He was out without a TV for 2 months while waiting for new parts.
