I have a 22 year old Benrus for Dress, some $10 Dollar Store special for everyday, bought in '99.

(Not a fashion whore!)

Unless you've got one of those sweet secret agent watches that shoots frikkin' laser beams and can apply baby powder to your scrotum, yes, otherwise a cell phone is most certainly a step forward.

When I see someone use a cellphone for a watch, it reminds me of olde tyme train conductors:

How? Basically, your cell phone replaces a pocket watch. That's a huge step forward.

And there are times, I don't carry my phone like doing yard work, that's what my beater timex is for.

Let me just remember to put on my arm-device that does absolutely nothing but tell the time and glisten in the sunlight, attracting members of the same sex.

I used to wear one. I actually used to give a shit as to what make and how accurate it was and all that jazz. Then I bought a smart phone.

And there are times, I don't carry my phone like doing yard work, that's what my beater timex is for.

Pulling out a cell phone isn't exactly difficult. I'm pretty sure you do this countless times a day anyway. Click one button and you have the time.

Also, if you find yourself needing the exact time while gardening then you need to ________ (I'll delete it before the mod sees!)

The only times I "roll" are:

When sparring - no watch because only a dipshit wears a watch while sparring
When baking - no watch because only a dipshit gets flour on their watch
When making sushi - no watch because only a dipshit contaminates their watch

Are you talking about dungeons and dragons?

Not sure if serious. I can come up dozens of times when wearing a watch is more convenient than having to pull out a cell phone and hit a button to check the time.

Gardening example. Yes, I want to be able to check the time b/c I have plans at a certain time or the football game is going to be on.

In a meeting, I can easily check the time instead of pulling out my phone while I'm sitting down.

When I'm running or at the gym, I don't carry my phone.

If you don't like convenience, that's fine but don't tell us using your phone as a watch is some leap forward.

Is that why people spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a watch? Sorry, I wasn't aware gardening and concurrent football games were so prevalent.
(^^ serious)

I actually bought a stopwatch for the gym so I can put the phone away. I ended up getting rid of that and just opted to use the timer app on my phone instead.

I think my point is that if you're somewhere where you can't have your phone on you then the exact time isn't particularly important. Unless, of course, it involves the water. Like the beach or scuba diving, otherwise I just don't see the "practicality" aspect. Those places where it's practical are few and far in between and don't require paying for an expensive stone-age mechanic.

So let's cut the BS: the watch serves as a status symbol or a relic that's hard to get rid of or both.

Let's be real here guys - guys buy watches because they are jewelry first and timepieces second. FFS I've worn watches with dead batteries before just to have the piece of metal on my wrist.

Again, you don't like convenience. I'm sure when you're in a meeting, having to adjust yourself so you can pull out your phone to check the time is a leap forward then just turning your wrist to see the time.

Plenty of times when being discreet to check the time occurs and you can do that with a watch and not a phone.

And you do know that you don't have to spend a lot of money on a watch, right?

Face it, you made a stupid comment and can't get out of it now and only making yourself look more stupid. And people that are carrying their phone in the gym, I call tools.

Watches are necessary in some places where phones aren't allowed. Just saying ...

So far we have the beach, scuba diving and gardening within mere minutes of a football game. I won't give you meetings because you can just buy a phone belt holster thing and pretend to be Clint Eastwood minus the senility.

Like flying on a plane? Damn leap forward from the stone age!

airplane mode exists for a reason - to get you to 10k feet so you can buy wifi.

Don't forget that the time is plasteredd everywhere on an airplane.

But what if you don't trust their clocks? Maybe their clocks are filthy liars.

Except for workplaces where they are strictly forbidden, great.

Once while I was tripping balls, my watch saved my life - it was the only device I trusted.

I'm not saying that there are no instances where a watch is preferred over a cell phone. I'm saying that there are [this] many reasons.

And in both cases, it may not be as convenient, as discreet or for some meetings, even possible.
