True true. Most laypeople's idea of an expensive watch is a blinged-out Rolex (one of my clients travels with 4 different iced-out Rolexes which cost him a total of $400K - I know this because he once left them in a hotel room safe with his gun, and I had to get them back).

Personally I generally prefer fancy watches that are very subtle, like the Jaeger-LaCoultre Master Ultrathin:

Very nice! If I'd spend more time in a suit, I would go for a very an ultrathin IWC with a similar look.

You probably need to be making over 1 million dollars a year to justify a $10,000 watch purchase if you figure someone making $50,000 can spend around $500.

I guess there is a point where you run out of practical things to spend your money on when you're making that much.

I can't stand leather straps on a watch.

KT

With any nicer watch I normally buy it on the bracelet (usually it's a much better deal to buy the bracelet with the watch rather than buying one later), but very often end up swapping it onto a leather strap. Generally I find a strap more comfortable and as a whole I think they look more elegant. Totally down to personal preference in any case.

luxury watches can be practical because they hold their value or sometimes go up in value.

I just don't like the feel of a leather band and I am pretty tough on stuff I own, so I always rough up leather bands very quickly. I also just prefer the look a full metal band.

Absolutely! They can be passed down as heirlooms, or inheritance, etc... How cool would it be if you can tell your kids ”Hey, sell these watches and get yourselves educated”.

Some of these time pieces can, in their own rights, be art.

Don't "roll" watches anymore. Ever since I accidentally smashed a really nice kinetic diving model by Seiko against the hull of the USS Duane, I've been rather disenchanted by the whole notion of wearing them.

Always have a phone on me anyway, I guess not being a slave to fashion lets me get away with only carrying one time telling device.

I don't even use the phone half the time, my sense of time along with where the sun is keeps me from being late for things.

I just wear this gshock. I like it... doesn't look as tacky as some of the other gshocks.

I have this watch:

I typically go to my watch first to check time, but this one has never done a good job. My Seiko did a better job and would go weeks without stopping.

<--- anti-watch snob.

When I do wear a watch it's a Timex I found for clearance $10 at Target.

My cell phone is always with me and I usually have the time on my home or work PC. There is a clock in our car. Hell even the microwave and stove range have clocks. One of these days Toto will incorporate clocks into their toilets (if they haven't already). In our bedroom we have a wall projection clock aimed at the ceiling because it's easier to look up at 2:30 AM.

I have two Citizen Eco-Drive watches I switch between.

I have one of those that I never wear. It just sits in a drawer in the bathroom. I break it out every couple years or so when I think I may actually want to wear it.

Watches are kind of outdated if you ask me. There is a clock on my computer, on my cell phone, in my car, on my microwave, nightstand, motorcycle, oven, toaster... ad nauseam.

Who needs a watch when you can wear a Movado clock to get the chicks!

Battery life is kind of low though.

I wear a watch everyday.

* My gf doesn't like it when I'm always checking my phone. Actually, it's pretty rude when you're having a conversatin with someone to check your phone. It can also be rude to check your watch, but usually it's much better manners.

* My conference rooms don't have clocks either. I work at the largest corporate campus of one of the largest banks in the world. Some people do put their blackberries on the table. That's fine. I like my watch.

...

I realize that not everyone sails or cooks or gives a flying fuck if they are rude to someone they are talking to. If you find that a watch has no practical utility for you, good, don't wear one, and don't post in fucking threads about watches.
I wear a watch for the reasons you cited above, and others.

My cell phone is off and in my car. It is on only when I need to make a call or am expecting one; nobody has my number and I want to keep it that way. Too distracting. It is far more convenient to glance at my wrist rather then dig in my pocket for a phone (which may be dead), read it, and put it back. Also, some of my pants/shorts don't have pockets, and I don't feel like carrying a cell phone which may get lost or stolen.

With clocks everywhere, I am kind of amazed that people are unaware of them, and make the efforts to dig out their phones to tell time.

I see people bring their phones by pools, on boats, docks, etc. and have seen my share of disasters. Nothing beats a waterproof watch for places like these.

Also, I do like the look of a watch. Some of the never-used features (e.g., tachymeter, extra dials) to me are cluttery and distract too much, but I know some people who enjoy the detail. I prefer clean looks with muted colors and bracelet bands. They last much longer than any smart phone will.

Would it interest you to learn that I've twice gotten a special discount at a retailer because of the watch I was wearing? The first time was at a camera store in the middle of haggling for some used equipment. The second was at a tailor who ended up charging about half off for some suit alterations.

In my line of work I've never felt the urge to give someone wearing a nice Omega or Breitling a discount off of my hourly rate, but apparently it is a terrific way to ingratiate yourself. A wise investment!

Heh I think that works in reverse also, friend of mine had fun experience at a higher end jewelry place - as we walked in, he overheard the staff go "ooh another Luminor, go get him". I would suspect that signaling wealth isn't a good tactic for future price negotiation.
