GF got this for my bday.. it's so awesome.

I wear a watch everyday to work. Outside of work, I usually don't wear it. I think a watch completes one's "professional attire", but I've been wearing watches since high school so I'm biased.

How many of the features do you use? I like gadgets, but that is awfully busy looking to me. My Citizen Calibre tells me at one glance that it is 1:12 PM on Wednesday Sept 5, which is exactly what I want from it.

Yeah from the picture it appears that way but the watch has a 45mm diameter which is bigger than most watches so it doesn't feel crowded to me.

A number of military pilots I have known wore Citizen Skyhawks. Not sure but maybe the slide rule bezel is useful for something related to flying (and obviously the multiple time zone features are). I agree it seems like a very busy dial for all-around use, but there is also a lot of utility there.

Panerai Luminor 1950 Flyback Chronograph
I've seen that term pop up recently. What's a flyback? Is that where the chrono hands snap back instantly to an upright position when reset? Or is it where they unwind gradually, reversing the elapsed cycles? IYKWIM

Flyback is the typical way many chronographs work today. A single button starts it, stops it and resets it. They usually have the typical two button method as well. I have not seen a three button chronograph (start, stop, reset all being separate button functions).

A sliderule is a manual calculator so its useful for any situation that needs a quick calculate.

Most of the flight chronographs come with a decent sized manual on how to work all the functions. There is a surprising amount of power in these devices.

A flyback chronograph is a complication watch, which uses a single push of the button for stopping, resetting and restarting the chronograph function.

Those are metal bands though right?

A dive buddy and friend of my parents used to be in the German AirForce. He doesn't have a thumb on his left hand anymore, when I asked him about it I made a quip about another moray incident (his wife got bit on a dive) but he sheepishly admitted to ignoring guidelines against wearing metal banded watches. He had to punch out of a unresponsive training fighter and the resulting G-forces caused his watch to slide off his wrist and shear off his thumb somehow.

Sounds plausible, pretty sure he wasn't screwing with me. If that's the case our pilots would probably have a similar risk right?
