What languages do I need for computer engineering?

I know I should have started a lot earlier, but I'm taking my first programming class in the spring, C. Someone in my statistics class mentioned FORTRAN and assembly and C++.. any others?

If you're talking about embedded real-time systems, then C++ is pretty universal. Ada is common too. There are still some systems out there using FORTRAN.

Grr.. it's just that none of this is in the degree audit.. I know I should have sat down and looked it over earlier but now that I'm starting to take higher level courses, they all have pre-reqs of "upper level programming languages" and the like

Classes for the languages aren't pre-reqs, just knowing them. Can I teach any of these to myself?

Depends what you intent to do, but you can't go wrong with C, C++ and Java. Those three are pretty universal. Of course, they are better at different things. Asm should be interesting, but I guess it's considerably more difficult (I have no experience in asm, so feel free to crucify me).

I hope you're wrong Bf told me yesterday that it's really easy, he hasn't done it either though

I'm getting myself all worried before I go in to take my physics final, blah

dont bother with asm, its well.. the programing language for computer guru's.

Focus on C++, Delphi and Java. Most commonly used programing languages.

No, I kinda have to.. the guy I was talking to in statistics told me that 1/4 of the Intro to CE class is asm and he's failing because he didn't learn it

Not good, dont wont to make you worried or anything but asm is crazy different compared to other computer languages, all these push and pops drive you nuts. With the other languages you can use your programing knowledge as a base for all of them.. but not asm, have to start from scratch.

*runs and hides*

Tells self, I'm smart, I can do this

But thanks everyone.. I think I'll go in and talk to the head of the CE dept soon

Delphi is OK, but it has the problem of being Windows-centric (unless you consider Kylix to be Delphi, but they are separate apps. Also, Delphi isn't a langauge as such, it's a RAD). Same with Visual Basic (well, Delphi and VB are alot alike). I would prefer more cross-platform languages, and C, C++ and Java fit the bill.

If you are interested in designing GUI's, take a look at Qt from Trolltech. It runs on Win32, Linux and Mac.

Delphi??? That's only for the Comp Sci and MIS people. For computer engineering you are going to need to learn:

C/C++
Java
x86 Assembly
If required some microprocessor assembly (I did Motorolla C11)
Maybe some Fortran

you'll need to know hindi and tamil too when you go out to work because there are a lot of north and south indians working as engineers. Here's one that I learnt.... tum kaise ho - how are you. This is Hindi. if you see a good looking indian lady, say ' kya maste!' meaning 'what a beauty!' and if somebody as you in hindi how you are, just say 'maste' - means good.

Of course, there are a lot of curse words that I learnt too, but I think I better not share it here...hahaha....

and the only tamil word that I learnt was 'vettuku polama' meaning 'let's go home'

Go for c++... the basics are easy to pick up witha bit of practice, and you shouldn;t have to get too deep into the harder stuff, as thats what us code monkeys are for
