I bought my wife an HP DV2000T and we both love it. In a few short months I'll be snagging myself a C2D version of the same lappie she's got.

I am a DIYer all the way, always have been. But her laptop makes me jealous even as I sit here in front of a dual core X2 4800+ machine. It has great battery life, it is small and light, it doesn't get hot, it's dead silent, and it's really powerful from a non FPS gaming standpoint. It's everything I'd want in a computer these days. And the display is beautiful.

Damn, I wonder if HP needs a shill?

Lenovo, because Thinkpads are the best-quality laptops made, with support to match.
Fujitsu, for making some of the most high-quality portables and ultraportables.
Panasonic, for making some of the most high-quality ultraportables.
Apple, because their design pushes the envelope, and we need strong alternatives.
Asus, for making stylish laptops that are also very well-designed. Witness the W3J, a fairly thin-and-light package with great graphics and a modular bay.

Dislikes:
Sony, for lack of good style (ugliness), bad track record of reliability, emphasis on form over function, poor customer service, and corporate philosophy.
Dell, for poor reliability, poor customer service (illegally poor in my case), poor design, putting cost before all else.

I personnaly have had a bad experience with Asus but i also know that they have got a good record, and i was just unlucky.

I have had my Sony Vaio PCGFXA-47 for over 4 years now and it has worked perfectly the whole time.I think it is a well built computer.

at the mo im very much liking what Asus has to offer

particularly the Asus A8Js..... 14.1 inch light wieght with a Geforce 7700 512mb GPU, 2gigs of ram, decent HDD its a good machine

SONY -
i really really like the style of the sony laptops, especially the crabon fibre models, they are laptop sex. however i do feel you get short changed with the specs more often than not with sony laptops.

Rock -
rock make some pretty beastly machines, and a good prices, but i have to say YUK YUK YUK at their choice of chassis. the ROCK CTX has a horrible looking chassis

Zepto - (www.zepto.com)
really impressed with some of their laptops, simple, minimalist but functional styling combined with some suprisingly good specs for not alot of money. already reccommended a zepto laptop to a friend who wanted a budget gaming rig. and for about £900 he got a neet little 14incher with a gig of ram, 80gig hard disk, 1.86Ghz Core 2 Duo and a geforce 7600 256mb and he's been well impressed.

ASUS. All the way. The ensemble series, as stated, is a real nice piece of work.

DELL is good for a basic laptop but I might want to put my flamesuit on

Good:
Asus (Great looking, relatively cheap, powerful)
IBM (Legendary)

Fail:
Fujitsu (Their older S series laptops are poorly designed, there is no mechanical support on the power jack, causing breakage and poor connections. They are a pain to take apart)

Just a thought. A more interesting perspective might be to profile the PEOPLE whose laptops needed all these repairs. That could be the Achilles heel - not the laptops themselves.

Travelmate line, specifically the 8200. Never had an issue with it i couldn't resolve shortly, and its a great performer all around. it is STILL the thinnest 15" with this much horsepower.
ASUS would probably come next, followed by dell.

I've had a Compaq X1000 for 3 years. It's gone to work with me every day, went overseas on our honeymoon for 3 weeks. I DON'T baby my equipment and it has been very good. I paid less than $900 for it 3 years ago. Great value.

My wife has had 2 Dell's the last three years(for work). The first one died an early death and her new one is a pile. Oversized, plasticy and heavy.

I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad T60p for work. Awesome machine so far. Thin, light, solid and very powerful. I'm pretty happy with it. GP

Out of the ones that I have used I prefer Dell Latitudes. But I scored a HP Pavilion at the last BF which I like quite a bit.

HP/Compaq sells more units than Sony and Asus combined. Not to mention all of the sub $600 laptop that are available now. You're also going to find more HP's in the local stores than you will Sony, and trying to find an Asus notebook at a chain store is going to be tough since they are a whitebox system . This is why you see very few of them coming in for service.

Good: Ultra rugged HP systems.
Bad: IBM, T-series in particular.

Hahaha, I'm joking... I've owned a T40 and typing this on a T42.. could never leave IBM. Their support is stellar.

Lenovo.

Why? I've never had a problem with my R50e. It is built like a tank. I am not getting rid of this until it dies. I do not game on it so I am keeping it until it's death. No flaws or problems.

Here you are getting the viewpoint of a guy who's done a fair amount of research. I've only actually used a Dell Latitude, and that was in 1999 and 2000.

Sony Vaio is obviously a high end, but other than hearing something good about it when it came out, I haven't heard anything.

Toshibas were pretty good.

Dell, HP (and I guess Compaq and Gateway) are more features for the money.

Heard good things about Asus and Fujitsu.

Thinkpads are the laptops with the best reputation generally for build, precision, pointer and especially quality of keyboards and service.

Asus, LG, Samsung, Sony, Lenovo (Thinkpads), and Fujitsu make some of the nicest notebooks. Gateway makes a nice affordable ultraportable (NX100X) but their int'l support, even to Canada, stinks. I don't trust Acer after my previous experience with them.
