What magazines do you actually pay cash to subscribe?

Wired and The Economist

Thinking about dropping Wired since their writing has gotten terrible over the past few years and every month the issue gets slimmer and slimmer. However it only costs like $10/year so it's not too bad. The Economist is sorta expensive, but totally worth it.

I get economist and WSJ from my delta mileage. this is the best way to use my delta mileage. it didn't cost me most than 5k mileage to get them both delivered to my house!

I had a subscription to Road & Track but it expired recently and I've been too lazy to renew it.

I have a subscription to Cruising World (my sister and her husband gave me a subscription) and Motor Cyclist (free subscription).

I used to have Wired, but wow did that magazine suck. Ok, maybe that's a bit harsh, but Wired seemed to be more about the presentation than the content. They had snazzy graphics everywhere, but I was always a little disappointed with the magazine.

Wired was great when I first started paying for a subscription about six years ago. However over the past few years their writing and articles have been getting a bit weaker. However last months read about a Wired editor who tried to change his name and disappear was a pretty cool story.

That's not a bad use of my miles. I fly only a couple of times a year but maybe it could be enough to pay for it.

I love The Economist, but it is pricey.

And I highly recommend it. Anand has a full page article once a month! There's tons of great articles and hardware reviews/tips/tweaks. Heck, there's even a column devoted to Linux every month, tweaking/usage/etc.

I just grabbed the top 6 on the shelf in the bathroom: The Family Handyman, Wildlife Conservation, Dirt Rider, American Motorcyclist, Grass Roots (NY Farm Bureau), Hobby Farms

I just got a card in the mail to get an extra year of Family Handyman for $5. I'll be sending it out early next week.

I was a loyal subscriber to Handloader, almost 15 years. Then the economy tanked. It was a pricey mag to begin with..so buhbuy

As convenient as the internet is for getting information, I prefer the physical aspects of magazines. It's the same reason why I'll always buy books and never get an e-book reader.

Time up until they discontinued the "Canadian" (ads) version. They sent me a partial refund, and I've been going to the bookstore weekly to read them since. Win win.

The household does subscribe to Maclean's though; kind of a Canadian Time/Newsweek.

Never understood that but my dad was like that sometimes spending 10 minutes on toilet. I'm in and out in less than a minute hardly enough time to read.
