I'm not posting this as a smart ass and really would like to know the physical traits of Diesel jeans that scream "quality." I've been wearing Walmart jeans until I realized that I look like Hank Hill - the denim's rough, the fit unflattering, and the dye jobs were off (the blues look hyper blue vs natural). I think I'll get one pair of nice jeans and wonder how nice jeans are defined.
I'll always buy walmart's $7.88 specials but think some occasions require something nicer than Faded Glory but not quite dress pants/khakis
*Update*
Finally went to century 21 and tried some premium denim. Seven for all mankind felt lighter than most denim, and the cloth was thin, which felt quite nice. They had deisel as well but not in my size.. Diesel was $99 and Seven for all mankind was $79, which is pretty reasonable compared to what I'm finding online... Also learned that "Seven7" and "Seven for all mankind" are different companies, which is contrary to what a lot of people think ("Seven7 is a lower end line"- not true, they're totally different companies).
I also tried out Lucky brand jeans and found that they were a great compromise - feels and fits great and only a few bucks more than Levis. I ordered the following online:
$31 - Lucky brand jeans: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ef=oss_product
$46 - Mavi jeans: http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Sh...3/product.html
Cheap Monday's also mentioned on clothing forums as being a great source of affordable but fashionable denim.
Update #2-
Got my jeans and tried them all out:
Lucky ($31) - My favorite pair, and no more expensive than levis. Nice, antique finish, fits outstanding, made in the USA, and I love the the thinner material.
Buffalo ($45) - Really nice, a noticeable step up from walmart crap but only marginally better than my favorite pair of levis. Made in china but fits great, but I wouldn't seek out the brand again
Mavi ($46) - Hand made, great finish and great material but (being a Europe brand, I guess), the cut seems to be a size smaller. I'll revisit it when I lose more weight.
All in all, I get why spending more on jeans make sense sometimes, and thrifty shopping can lead to great deals. I look forward to losing some wait and getting a pair of Diesels (I'll wait until I can find a pair for $75 or so).
*The biggest advantage: My Lucky's are now my favorite jeans because the thing material and premium cotton breathes so well - I don't get soggy, sweaty underwear! It's been quite humid and hot in NYC and I've worn them nearly every day this week and they don't reek - that sounds gross but most other jeans would be drenched in sweat by now.
