so here is my situation.

as of right now, 29 years old, 5'3, around 128 to 130 lbs. Seriously underweight.

Back in January of this year, I was about 150, had a belly, so I started to eat right, lifting weights 3x a week, and I lost some weight and it dramatically reduced my belly. I went down to 138 to 140. The past couple months, I got sick, and I actually lost a severe number of pounds w/in 2 weeks, and went down to to 120 to 122. been working extremely hard to gain the weight and it is just not coming as fast as I want. I'm trying to eat as much as I can, and if mass gainers are the easiest way, I want to give it a try. I want to at least get to the 145 to 150 range, but don't want it all to go the belly

I actually eat very clean, which I think is what helped me flatten my stomach. Eat throughout the day, no added salt, no added sugar, eat oats, protein shakes, nuts almonds, chicken breast, eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, greek yogurt, and if I eat bread, it's sprouted grains. No processed food. I would say if I eat fast food or junk food, it might be once every 2 weeks in a social gathering.

So I think from that perspective, I'm doing good. 90% clean.

Now, I have been looking at the GNC Raw Rebuilt mass gainer
http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4396597

Any thoughts on this? lots of calories, lots of carbs, protein, BCAA, creation.

actually, i don't think you're 'seriously underweight'.

depending on the type of frame you have, you might be slightly underweight. people at 5'3" range from 110 to 145.

but i'm guessing you are dead center good.

if you want to add weight, skip all mass gainers, and use dense natural foods to make yourself a anabolic shake in the morning and evening.

If you need a dry powder at the gym, then any mass gainer will do. Almost every one of them is a simple combination of maltodextrin (a high glycemic medium-chain carbohydrate) married to whey protein concentrate with some vitamins/minerals thrown in. So just get what is cheapest per pound. Bodybuilding.com usually has the best prices these days.

However, any powder gainer on the market is actually inferior to Chocolate Milk, and this has been proven time and again in studies (both directly with Chocolate Milk head to head against powders, and contextually...such as studies where Casein + Whey powders in a milk ratio proved superior to whey or casein alone for muscle synthesis).

Ultimately, weight gain is about calories. Calories is God. So just drink as much chocolate milk and eat as much calorie-dense food as you can. Use the mass gainer if it makes it easier. It usually does. Nothing helps boost your calorie count as much as calorie-dense liquids.

Why not just eat more of the foods you enjoy instead of looking towards mass gainers?

I would watch the term 'gainer' - in general gainers provide too many carbs for proper diet proportions.

Just' saying.

Cost prohibitive and extremely time consuming to cook meals all the time?

I don't think cost is a concern if the OP is willing to drop $80 on 6lbs of powder. Anyhow, at 5'3, 130lbs all he has to do is cook and eat like someone who weighs 170 lbs he'll gain weight for sure.

I have the time to cook and eat ~3000 calories a day and it's not that expensive. I spend as much on the other 1500 calories that I get daily which are from whey/home made gainer shakes. If the OP is 130lbs eating 3000 calories a day will make him gain some weight. It's irritating when people claim they can't gain weight and don't try to eat.

Eat and drink milk (2% or whole if you can gag it down) like it's your job. Schedule multiple meals and stick to it.

What the main recommendation to gain weight if you can't drink milk (e.g. from lactose intolerance)?

Eat more of what it is you normally eat. Seriously, just help yourself to an extra serving. If you're looking for ideas of what to eat, then one of my favorites would be a 2 TBSP of PB (I love White Chocolate Wonderful from PB&Co) and a banana. I could eat that in between every meal if I wasn't on a 1700 kcal cut

Why don't you just eat less clean? I'm not saying go to Mcdonald's every day but you can incorporate other foods in your diet are still healthy but are higher calorie like beef.

Basically Whey protein shakes and live in the gym is what you want. Back in University I had a similiar problem as being underweight. I jacked myself with Whey protein shakes, Amino acids and literally lived in the Gym (3x per day).

Gained 20lbs of muscle mass, people flipped when they saw me. My Finance professor blurts out loud in a full elevator "Holy crap you filled out" That was an outcome I really didn't want tho... fighting a rumour that I am sleeping with my teacher
