What memory for GA-7VAXP? PC2100 or PC2700? Plus 2100+ Question...

I'm planning to build a new machine. I've settled for the Gigabyte GA-7VAXP, with an Athlon XP 2100.

Its my first venture into DDR, so i am unsure what DDR RAM i should to use with this board and cpu. Should I get PC2100 or PC2700? (doesnt matter if one costs a bit more than the other, but within reason of course!)

Plus, I'm looking at getting an Athlon XP 2100. Does the GA-7VAXP support the thoroughbred core? I can get either the t'bred or palomino core for the same price here in the UK.

If you don't intend to OC, just match the ram to your CPU. If your CPU supports 133FSB, use PC2100. If it supports 166FSB, use PC2700. If you intend to OC, then get the fastest RAM you can afford - PC2700, 3200, 4000 etc.

Just go for the DDR 2700 ram. You can run the memeory bus faster than the cpu bus and get a performance boost.

Actually, if you run your memory async, you could suffer a performance hit. At the best you don't get near the extra memory performance you would be paying for. Always best to run memory and CPU in sync.

WTF are you talking about?

Have you ever tried it? I have. It works great.

Ever check out the performance tests of KT400 boards? The best performance is when PC2700 ram is used at the 333 bus and cpu is left at its 266 bus. Assuming no OC. PC3200 is crap right now due to a standards issue.

I think i'll go for pc2700, it only costs £30 for 256MB and a few pounds less for pc2100 256MB. So if there are any problems, it wont cost too much to rectify.

always buy the best memory your budget allows.either that or you'll always regret it.

Kimber- Do you mean buy a brand thats good (e.g. buy Crucial memory)?

If so, then thats ok, as it isnt much more money.

That's what he means. Buy good equipment and you will minimize your troubles.
