I ask this because I saw on tdk's website that they recommend first making an image of the disk on the hard drive and then burning the image on a disk. The site says that this results in a "perfect bit for bit copy" while other methods might not. This method is recommended over burning from cd-rom to cd-rw. I have a tdk 12x10x32 and a toshiba 48x. What would be the best way to copy audio cd's and the best software to use? Should I copy from cd-rom to cd-rw or do it all with the veloCD? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

This one really just depends on your hardware. If you are worried about buffer underruns and stuff like that, then the best way is to just make an image on your HDD.

If all you are concerned about is quality, then it doesn't really matter which way you burn. You can do it on the fly or by imaging, whichever you want...

But I always image to my harddrive and then burn out to CDR because my CD reader and writer are on the same channel and I don't want to get buffer under runs, but with BURNproof it shouldn't matter.

Oh yeah and I use CDRWin, CloneCD is suppose to be quite good to, but I've used CDRWin for a long time and I've never had problems with it.

My 4x doesn't need an image with modern equipment. Still puzzled as to why I only get buffer underruns on 2x though.

call me anal, but usually when i'm making an "archive cd" or a hard copy i want to be backup of some files, i turn everything off to a minimum and just let it burn... ensures a good burn = )

I use CloneCD with a Toshiba 1402 and Plextor 8220 (SCSI) and have never had problems. One of my friends did mention something about the image files made by CloneCD are only readable by CloneCD to burn them, but I havent tested this so I dont know for sure. Anyways, CloneCD!!

I always copy directly from disc to disc. In order for you to do that at 12x, you must make sure DMA is enabled for both drives (your player and burner). If either drive doesnt support DMA, make sure you try it out at 12x first and hopefully not increase your coaster set. Some of your audio cd's (and data too) may be "copy protected". So you will have to burn them using CloneCD.
CDRWin is my fav for copying discs. Very simple to use!

If I want to copy an audio cd to a cdr on the fly I just use DiscDupe in the Plextor Manager 2000 Utilities. I have no problems copying cd's at 12x on from my Plextor 40x MAX scsi cdrom drive to my Plextor 12/10/32 scsi cd burner.

If I want to copy data(games, apps, etc.) cd's I just use my 40x MAX cdrom with CloneCD to rip it to my hd and then burn the cd using the image that was made.

Aubie if you want to copy an audio cd on the fly you need to make sure that your cdrom drive can do DAE at a speed faster than the speed that you are burning. My 40x MAX drive can do DAE from about 17x-40x speed, which is easily enough for me to burn at 12x.

As long as your 48x can do audio extraction at 12x or higher you should be A-OKAY . . . but sometimes thats not set in stone.

As for making copies of programs that come onto CD, thats what copying to the hard drive is most important for. the TDK CD-RW is one of the few CD-RW's that can read a CD in RAW format. This means that it reads everything off of the disk, hidden, damaged, or anything, and puts it into the image. This is the best way to burn copy-protected software (for backup, of course) because nothing can stop it, not even laserlock, if I remember correctly.

I always burn my music at 1X, at times I have noticed a strange fuzz in the background with burning at 2x, and 4x. Could be just a fluke, but I would rather have the best sound quality possible.
