I dont have a very vast knowledge about monitors and refresh rates but I want to purchase a new one for heavy duty gaming. Just a 17inch lcd monitor for not too costly preferably around $300-$500, with pretty good response time. Can anyone help me with some suggestions?

My rig:
p4 2.66ghz OC'ed to 3.2
1gb of pqi turbo 2-3-3-6
EVGA 6800 ultra/LE (GTU bios) 425x1100
gigabyte mobo
120gb sata drive
cd-cd rw/dvd drive
creative 24-bit live!

Definitely looks like a good LCD. Unfortunately there are so many LCDs on the market so there's a shortage of reviews. I say go for it, if you can't find a review. I'm not a person who believes in brand loyalty. Worse comes to worse you'll have to return it with a 15% restocking fee. As for Newegg, they are excellent. I've been through an RMA with them (not defective product, just change of mind). All went well.

I dont believe in brand loyalty but i am curious about there reputation is there anyone in here who owns an acer monitor? im prolly gonna go with this anyways but just curious. I really like the design of this monitor with the connections all located at the base, hiding wires and the buttons located there also sliming downt the overall size of the screen. I too have had my fair share of RMA's with the egg......:[

I also have a SyncMaster 710T (710N with DVI). It's fine for games. Good as you're going to get without Overdrive. Overdrive is the antichrist.

sry i dont need a 19inch i like playing games 1280x1024 or 1024x768 at max settings, i wouldnt trade performance for size. Also the one you linked has 8ms the one i chose has 6.

I have a Samsung 730B, and it is okay. I wouldn't say it is stellar, for two reasons

1. 8ms response time isn't enough for my eyes, I can see ghosting on CRT's.
2. It is probably very good contrast ratio for an lcd, but it still has some grey leakage.

but on the other hand, it has EXCELLENT color reproduction, and the clarity is amazing!

The 19" only uses 1280x1024 for a native resolution as well... From what I have seen 17"
s are pretty weak.

does it play at 1024x768 for games like F.E.A.R which is the only setting that runs smoothly with me card?

Agreed , All LCD's should have smooth glossy screens like NEC's Opticlear.
It makes a differance in image quality ,although I've heard people say it causes glare issues but so do CRT's right? ...It's never actualy been a problem for me.

Your expectations are all wrong if you think you're going to play at 1024x768.

why? 1024x768 is fine for gaming. Of course ide rather play at 1280x1024 and crank up AA and AF but its just not possible in upcoming games(unless you have a 7800).

A 17" LCD doesn't have a native resolution of 1024x768 either... So what does that matter? If you want a native res of 1024x768 you need a 15" or smaller.
17 + 19's have the same resolution.... So they should be equal at playing at 1024x768 even though both will display an incorrect aspect ratio.

Because non-native resolutions (ie below 1280X1024 on a 17" LCD) don't look anywhere near as good on LCD's. It's best to run the native resolution in everything.

By the way - 17" and 19" LCD's all run at the same resolution: 1280X1024 (native), so you won't lose any performance going from a 17" to a 19" LCD.

That said, I have both a Samsung 710T (12ms, DVI) and a Samsung 730B (8ms, DVI) and both are excellent monitors. I can't detect any ghosting with either (personally, anything below 16ms is fine for me), and the 730B looks awesome in games.

My buddy just got new Samsung 913T on my advice (it's basically the same thing as the Samsung 930B, but with a different stand. Both are 8ms, DVI monitors), and it is absolutely spectacular looking. I'd recommend the 913T or 930B if you can afford them.
