What motherboard?

Hi,

I currently own an ABIT BE6 mobo with the integrated HighPoint HTP366 udma/66 controller. I recently bought a new HD (an IBM - 60gb, 75GXP), but the controller can't handle it, not even with the latest bios'.

So I was figuering to - why not - buy me a new mobo. Now I'm looking for a stable mobo, that won't empty my wallet.

My processor is a PIII 500 (Slot).

(I was also wondering what kind of thing those new socket mobo's are? Any explanation on that plz)

It just needs to be stable, and if possible, fast. Preferebly also atleast an UDMA/66 controllor onboard, but not the HPT366 (it's crap). It should also make it possible to upgrade in the future to a faster processor.

My first advice, would be to get an i815E chipset mobo with has native ATA100 support, though you mentioned you have a slot CPU so that leaves the 815 out of the question, though if you don't want to spend too much you could also get Promise ATA100 controller card, and keep your existing motherboard. Those are my suggestions.

I know that that is an option, but there's the problem that I cannot disalbe the onboard controller in the BIOS.

It will still keep locking out IRQ11, and i'm already short on irq's so i could use this one... Unless ofcourse it makes no trouble to double use that irq with the promise card.

well, i would go for a i815, but then you'd have to spend a few hundred on a new processor, but it might be worth it.

I'm not planning on spending money on the processor, only on the mobo. Thus i need a slot 1 mobo.
