Just wanted to chime in and thank the OP and others who posted here. Thanks to this thread, I picked up a Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H for $39 at Newegg after rebate (actually $29 after AMEX checkout discount). After tinkering for a day, I'm running a rock solid 4.2 @ 1.135 on stock cooler. Temps no higher than mid 70's on all Prime95 tests, and successfully ran 20 loops of x264 overnight. I'm sure I could push it higher with more voltage (board allows up to 1.2), but I'm happy with the setup. For $70 all in ($40 CPU sale at Fry's and $30 MOBO at Newegg), I don't see how this combo can be beaten for value!

"Non-Z" overclocking with the G3258 has taken a serious hit with a recent Windows Update (for Win 7 & 8) and the RTM build of Windows 10. Microsoft released a patch that updated the microcode for the G3258, which results in a boot-loop for users of most H-series and B-series motherboards that used to support overclocking the chip.

http://forum.asrock.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=441&PN=7&title=kb3064209-breaks-the-g3258

As a result, mobo makers have released new BIOSes that correct the problem, but they also disable overclocking on the G3258. I suspect that you're using an updated BIOS that no longer supports OCing because of the microcode patch.

You can remove the update on Win7/8 or use a hack to work around the patch. I'm not sure if there's a workaround for Win 10 or not.

This is really a BS move by Intel. Many of us bought G3258 systems based on the value proposition of overclocking the chip on a cheap board to achieve i3-like performance at a lower price. If you have to buy a pricey Z-series board to overclock, what's the point of getting a G3258 when you can get a cheap board + an i3 for the same price?

I understand if some don't need so much CPU power like HTPCs, or just fool around with the G3528... but not paying $50 extra for a 3.6GHz i3 that thoroughly destroys the G3528 at any clock in apps that isn't not extremely single threaded and without all the cons of OCing is silly.

Use the +/- keys to adjust the multiplier. I also freaked out initially because I couldn't press enter or click on it with the mouse.

Sure enough , plus / minus keys.

Anyways ... thanks for this thread.

I purchased the MSI H81M-P33 for $60 at NCIX and I have a stable OC 4.2ghz at a nice low 1.082v.

I am currently at 4.4ghz with a voltage of 1.175v. Prime95 stable for a bit and been surfing the net fine. Crashed at 1.15v so I came up 0.025v more volts and seems to be kosher.

Stock cooler.

Is it just an AsRock mobo issue? I haven't seen this mentioned in other G3258 threads I've been following.

Is G3258 the only unlocked CPU affected by this feature? What about other K CPUs on H/B chipsets. They used to overclock just as well.

Today my system hardlocked and got stuck in a boot loop.

Figured it might be that patch, but turns out I had that installed for over a week. Lowered the overclock with 100 MHz and it's working fine agian.

Maybe the patch doesn't break my system because I have all the powersaving turned off.

That may be a one of the reasons why I cannot OC (regarding that patch) and getting boot loops every time I try with my Asus B85 Pro G/G3258 - but then again, not that familiar with it much and the BIOS for me has gotten overwhelming... Anybody here got the same board and successfully OC'd it? Any help would be great.

***update
Finally successfully OC'd it. Really something to do with the micro code from either Microsoft or Intel (pointing fingers). Thanks.

The latest BIOS firmware for my Gigabyte B85M-DS3H, which states "Update CPU microcode for win10 support with Pentium AE", kills overclocking on the G3258.

Hi guys,
I am new here. Recently I have bought a G3258 CPU with an MSI B85I itx board and I would like to share my OC results. Maybe other people will find them useful. Seems only one more forum user used that MSI board ( I bought it after finding this thread, actually).

I can confirm it is a really good board for OCing G3258. I could easily get stable 4.4GHz @ 1.275V with a stock cooler. Temps under load are <75C. Can't go to 4.5GHz though. No matter what I do with the voltages I get a crash just the moment windows loads.

setting to balanced powered plans allows auto decrease of the frequency to 800MHz

Weird. I have the GA-H81M-DS2V, and when I updated to F6, which mentioned the G3258 and Win10, I was able to OC higher than with the F5 BIOS. Granted, I'm still on Win7.

I'm surprised to hear the Win10 compatibility BIOS update for that board killed OCing.

It's the same everywhere, Intel killed it with non Z87 boards, same with non Z97 now! ASRock, ASUS, MSI, ECS et al suffer from the same fate, what's worse is that they allowed this for well over a year & then just pulled the rug under everyone's feet especially G3258 owners like me

Note to self ~ get AMD next time!

Is anyone having success with the Win10 workaround with non-Z boards? I just got a G3258 on an MSI B85-G41 PC Mate board and I was hoping to both OC it and run Windows 10. Does anyone know if this workaround works for clean installs of Win10 as opposed to Win7/8 upgrades?

It should work with clean installs. You have to disable 1 core in the bios to do the clean install though. Then you can do the fix, enable the core and overclock.

I have this H81M-P33 motherboard running with a i7-4790k processor. And I want to overclock it now. This board's overclocking capabilities are unlocked only for Pentium G3258, so this board has got overclokcing capabilities which I really want to unlock.

So has anybody here been able to unlock Non-Z board for overclocking ? I can unlock the BIOS using AMIBCP if anybody can tell which option I need to unlock. I have tried unlocking the voltage options so far but whatever voltage I set, it doesn't have any impact, probably because there is an option somewhere for overclocking which needs to be unlocked first. Any help would be appreciated!

There's not some "non Z" thingy somewhere?

Maybe msi blocked it to protect the board.

Its overclocking capabilities work with a Pentium G3258 (Pentium-K) processor. So there must be an option in bios somewhere which can unlock the capabilities on i7-4790k too. I have access to all the hidden options in the bios through AMIBCP.

Got it myself. There was just a simple trick. If I enable "Enhanced turbo", then it lets me set my own voltages. So everything works now, all the overclocking settings.

Looks like the Windows 10 Fall update has cleared up the microcode issue. I'm overclocking fine without any manipulation of the system files.

Sounds awesome!
Can you share the results? Also I'd be very grateful if you mention voltage, temperatures and cooler that you used.

Hey guys, just got my g3258 and MSI H81M-E33 in. I would have gotten the H81M-P33 seeing as how it is the popular choice but they were all sold out : (. Anywho..

I got a stable OC of 4.5ghz@1.25v. I wasn't expecting even 4.2 honestly because this motherboard hasn't been used that often.. but I'm really surprised. Very happy with the results. I might push it further, maybe 4.6ghz@1.3v.

Thats fantastic. Mine gave up at 4.6, Run it at a safe 4.0 ghz though still cool and capable. Not regretted paying out more money for an i3. At the time I would not have a set up if I had to go the extra £40 for an i3, I would have been stuck with an overheating laptop.

Yeah same here, laptop and all. Lol! I'm also using a Noctua low-profile cooler, NH-L9x65. Bought a mini-micro case and it looks great sitting inside of it.
