Only got 4.39GHz out of my combo, due to the voltage being limited to 1.2V. It never exceeded 70°C during Cinebench 11.5 even with high ambient temps.

I've got the G3258 + Gigabyte H81M-DS2V heading my way ($80 combo deal from Newegg). My first build and I've never overclocked...

Can you tell me what settings you used on your combo to reach 4.39GHz? I realize that chips will vary but any advice would be appreciated!

I don't have the parts in question any more, and my record keeping is non-existent. All I remember doing is maxing out the voltage and having the multiplier set for 44. I believe the ring bus was at 40, but I can't remember for sure. All parts seem to have different limitations, but 1.2V is a relatively safe voltage, so set that and work your way up with the multiplier. Hopefully you will get close to or better than my result.

Mine only got to 3.8, and I'm not sure that was even fully stable for DC work.

Mine wouldn't even boot at 40x.

Larry, I got one that will only do 3.9 as well. I haven't ruled out user error yet, and I am using this one on an updated Z87 with a beta BIOS. I need to check for a stable BIOS and try again, but clearly some parts have far less capability than others.

What you have experienced is boot failure due to your setting not working. It is normal. First you need to make sure you have manually set the voltage, then slowly increase the multiplier until instability or boot failure occurs.

Generally you cannot use the BIOS from a different board revision unless you know it has been done successfully. I'm sorry that you have ended up with a chip or board that is less capable than expected. My second G3258 is the same way, it won't exceed 3.9. I shouldn't be suspicious but it almost seems like a bunch of really nice chips got released to create a buzz and now we are seeing lots of dogs. I wish I had my first one back because it would run at 4.9 if I wanted it to.

I think that they certainly aren't binning them for anything over stock. With my vcore on AUTO, my chip was at 1.201 at stock 3.2 speed, IIRC. Or pretty close to it.

Is your 3.9 GHz G3258 being used on a different board than the one that went 4.9 GHz?

Mine goes to 4.8, I can boot 4.9 but it's not stable enough even for cinebench. Guess I should be happy with a decent chip.

What is the off the shelf, most rock steady non-z board for overclocking the G3258?
I don't think anyone can say for sure, because it has become obvious that there are great differences between G3258 samples. But your best guess would be to look at the list on page 1 of this thread and pick one that clocked high.

Thanks for this topic guys! I've been watching it for some time, but now I needed to registrate becouse of my question I can't find answer to: can motherboards reported in this topic overclock i5 Devil's Canyon (4690k)? Maybe somebody treid, maybe somebody tried or knows some topic with user reports similar to this one but about i5 DC?

Thanks in advance for any answers

I tried overclocking my 4770K on the Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2V, and while it technically is unlocked for this purpose, it would not go over 4.0GHz on all four cores. Since the voltage is limited on most of these boards, and the power delivery system is generally pretty small, you just can't push a quad core very hard with these little boards unless you have a very good sample.

It's not even about "pushing to the limits", just gaining few more MHz. Also, many boards with "not that bad" VRM is still cheaper than Z97 boards, especially theese cheapest with also weak VRM.

Thanks for your response then, maybe anyone else?
